Zayvonie C. James was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on February 7, 1987, to Tammy M. Fleming and (biological-father, the late Clayton Thomas). She soon after captured the heart of Charles F. James Jr., who chose the role of her father and made it official. Zayvonie was fondly known as Vonie by her family and friends. Her niece and nephews affectionately called her TeeTee.
As the eldest of her siblings, Vonie embraced the role of leader and protector. She made it her mission to keep her family closely connected and she deeply loved her sister and two brothers.
But there was so much more to Zayvonie than her role within the family. A vibrant and expressive soul, she had a deep love for singing—often unapologetically and joyfully off-key—and dancing to the rhythm of her own heart, never concerned with who was watching. Her boldness and zest for life became a signature trait and an inspiration to others to live authentically.
Zayvonie had a passion for sports, engaging in many over the years, though basketball remained her favorite. While attending Clark Montessori (Class of 2005), she lettered in basketball and formed lasting friendships. It was also during these years that she discovered her love for books. With every story she read, she learned the power of independent thought and the beauty of challenging societal norms. Though she eventually slowed down with sports, her love of reading remained a lifelong passion.
An avid reader, Vonie passionately supported Black authors. Her perfect days often involved a great book on a random park bench, being kissed by the sun. Along with reading she had a deep love for art and writing.
Zayvonie lived her life with vibrancy and intention. She loved to travel and cherished her opportunity to visit Japan—immersing herself in new cultures, cuisines, and ideas. Her thirst for knowledge was matched only by her gift for bringing joy and light into the lives of those around her. She cultivated deep, enduring friendships and was profoundly loved.
She entered every room with a smile that could outshine the stars and a laugh that will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew her. Though her journey has come to an end, her legacy inspires us all to laugh freely, love deeply, and live with bold authenticity.
Zayvonie passed away on June 20, 2025. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Otis Fleming Sr. and her paternal grandmother, Linda James Higgins.
