Frequently Asked Questions

How expensive is a funeral?

Our professional staff members work closely with families to plan a funeral that fits their budget. We have a variety of options for funeral services offered at a number of price points. A complete funeral at Thompson, Hall & Jordan costs $3170 and includes a visitation or funeral service held at one of our beautiful facilities or chapels as well as the transfer of remains to a funeral home and final resting place. A direct cremation costs $1295.

Contact our highly trained staff to find out more about what is included in these pricing options and more. We are happy to work with you and your family to arrange services that feel comfortable and appropriate for your needs and budget.

What is the difference between a funeral and a memorial service?

The deceased’s casket or body is present at a funeral, while a memorial service takes place after the burial or cremation has occurred. Both funerals and memorial services honor the life of an individual and usually involve close family and friends.

Is it necessary to have a viewing?

A viewing is entirely optional. Some people feel uncomfortable with the idea of viewing the deceased at a funeral. Looking at or spending time with the casket, however, is not required at a viewing. It is a chance for the deceased’s family to share in their grief with close friends and community members. A viewing also gives people a chance to say one last goodbye before the deceased is buried or cremated.

Should I preplan my funeral?

Preplanning is a free service we offer to our neighbors here in the tri-state area. The benefits to preplanning are many: It locks in the price of your funeral and allows you to choose the elements you’d like included or excluded. Planning a funeral after the death of a loved one is stressful, as there are many emotions at play. Preplanning saves your family the anxiety and cost of planning your funeral after you’re gone.

Should children be involved in a funeral?

Death is a natural part of life and one from which children shouldn’t be excluded. If your child is old enough to ask questions about death, you might find it helpful to include them in the funeral services of a loved one. Use your discretion and keep in mind the child’s age and maturity level. Young children may wish to participate in outdoor activities such as laying a flower on the casket or a buttery release following a memorial service.

Balloon releases are not allowed at Spring Grove Cemetery or Oak Hill Cemetery.

What are some ways I can personalize a funeral or memorial service?

Personalization may include something as simple and comforting as serving a loved one’s favorite dessert at the reception following their burial or cremation. You may also choose to do something more elaborate, like holding a candlelight ceremony in their honor. Many families now are opting to webcast memorial services and funerals so that faraway family and friends can attend. If you have an idea of how to make a service special, contact us to see how we can support your vision. No detail is unimportant when it comes to celebrating the life of your loved one, and our expert care team can help you make the choices that are right for your family.
