With profound sadness, we announce the passing of William Albert “Billy” Finnell, Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, who left us peacefully on April 12, 2024.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on May 2, 1944, to Albert and Emma Jean (Oden) Finnell, Billy was a beacon of light in the lives of all who knew him. A proud graduate of Taft High School and the University of Cincinnati, he carried the spirit of education throughout his life. His love for sports was evident as he played football at Shaw University and the University of Cincinnati, where he not only honed his athletic skills but also his leadership and teamwork abilities.
Billy was a respected Vietnam veteran and proud member of the airborne division. Stationed in Ft. Campbell, KY, he served his country with honor and dedication. His time in the Army was marked by a steadfast commitment to his fellow soldiers and the nation.
Billy’s journey as an educator began at Mt. Airy Elementary School, where he met the love of his life, Dolly. His passion for teaching was only matched by his entrepreneurial spirit, which led him to establish Finnell Construction. His dedication to revitalizing homes in the Mount Auburn area was a testament to his commitment to community and hard work.
A life-long learner, Billy never stopped seeking knowledge and perfecting his craft. His love for fishing and good food was only surpassed by his love for his family. He was a pillar of support for his children, Cassandra (Sandi), Keri, Billy Jr., and Nigel, often found teaching them how to swim, training them on the soccer field, basketball court, or coaching their teams. His belief in the potential of every individual made him a cherished coach, mentor, and friend.
Billy’s legacy is carried on by his devoted wife, Dolly Finnell; his daughters, Cassandra (Sandi) Finnell and Keri Finnell; his sons, William (Billy) Finnell, Jr. and Nigel Finnell; and a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren, including his special granddaughter, Ma’at (May) Shields. He is also survived by his loving sisters, Charlotte Penebaker, Janet (Freddie) Germany, Tammy (Tony) Bert, and Adrienne Sherman; brothers, Kevin (Mecia) Hankerson, Albert (Teresa) Finnell, Jr., and many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Emma Dean (Oden) Finnell, his sister, Jeannie Ford, brother Garry Hankerson, and grandson, Quavale Finnell, Billy leaves behind a legacy of love, perseverance, and the unwavering belief in the goodness of others.
As we bid farewell to a man who was the embodiment of strength and kindness, we take comfort in knowing that his guidance and love will continue to inspire us every day.
