Dr. Waymon L. Wallace, Jr. departed this life on Friday, October 18, 2013 at Triple Creek Nursing Home, Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Wallace was born on April 17, 1935 in Harpersville, Alabama. Dr. Wallace was a proud graduate of Shelby County Training School in Alabama where he graduated with honors. He also graduated from Alabama A&M University with honors and Tennessee State University with honors, and the Univer-sity of Cincinnati, Ohio.
“Doc” Wallace, as he was affectionately called by his students and peers, taught high school at Dallas County Training School, Beloit, Alabama; East Highland High School and Sylacauga High School, Sylacauga, Alabama. In these schools, Doc taught Science and Math. In Cincinnati, Ohio, he taught Biology, Math, and was the Athletic Director at Withrow High School. Doc Wallace’s final teaching was done at the University of Cincinnati where he taught Social Research and Statistics. While at UC, he was named as an Honorary Scholar to the Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity.
Dr. Wallace also served in the United States Army Reserve. He served on the Island of Oahu, Honolulu, Hawaii. Stationed at Ft. DeRussy, Hawaii, he was instrumental as head of his group in organizing the official program for the people of Hawaii’s celebration of becoming an official state of the United States of America, and we were there.
Dr. Wallace was a member of the oldest African America Fraternity for men, Alpha Phi Alpha (1906). He joined this distinguished fraternity during his early college years. For this reason, he often said this famous quote, “Lives of great men all remind us we should make our lives sublime and departing leave behind us footprints on the sands of time.”
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Waymon L. Wallace, Sr. and Eula Bell (Davis) Wallace, and sister, Dr. Allene Wallace Reed.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his beloved wife of 53 years, Gloria Fluker Wallace; his son, Waymon L. (Wanda) Wallace, MD of Cincinnati, Ohio; two grandchil-dren, Caulan R. Wallace of Cincinnati, Ohio and Yutopia K. Essex of Los Angeles, California; one great-grand-daughter, Harper L. Alexander of Los Angeles, California; three sisters, Jewel W. Dailey of Louisville, Kentucky, Countress Threatt of Alabaster, Alabama and Angela (Charles) Hicks of Harpersville, Alabama; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
