Walter (Sonny) Barnes was born on April 17, 1947, in Selma, Al to Lloyd and Bessie Barnes. Walter departed this world on February 14, 2024, in Cincinnati, Ohio after a more than 20-year battle with Parkinson’s disease. Walter was a man of many talents and passions, excelling in academics, and sports, a mentor, and teacher throughout his life.
Walter graduated from Withrow High School. With his good grades and football skills, he went on to play Division 1 football and later graduated from Miami University. Walter also received a Master’s in Education from the Xavier University. Walter pursued and enjoyed a career in education, teaching at Cincinnati Public Schools.
On August 22, 1970, Walter married Yvonne Barnes. Their union spanned almost 20 years and produced two grateful and loving sons.
Walter taught Health, P.E., and Driver Education for over 30 years and coached football at Hughes and Woodward high schools. He retired in the early 2000s.
Aside from his professional accomplishments, Walter was a devoted family man who cherished spending time with his loved ones. He loved watching sports, especially for the local sports teams. Walter enjoyed singing R&B classics. He sang in talent shows with his co-workers who turned out to be lifelong friends. They were known to bring the house down singing Heatwave’s “Always and Forever”. He enjoyed working out and playing golf. Walter ran and completed “The Flying Pig Marathon”. He also earned a 3rd-degree black belt in Okinawan Karate.
Walter worked with his uncles’ business “Barnes Brothers Barbershop”, where he helped with the promotion and distribution of BG93 a skin care product for many years. Walter was also an NFL scout. Walter’s impact on the lives of those who knew him was immeasurable, as he led with strength, love, and forgiveness, leaving a lasting legacy of greatness.
Throughout his life, Sonny made a lasting impact on those around him. As a teacher, he inspired countless students with his wisdom, guidance, and dedication to their success. As a father, he was a pillar of strength and support, he was always there to offer love, advice, and encouragement. As a coach, he provided his student-athletes with a gentle reminder to G.A.T.A! His presence will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Walter is survived by his three loving sisters Eula Mayfield, Lowrie D. Turner, and Dr. Athealia Bell (Talmadge), two sons Milan Barnes (Kristin) and Brandon Barnes (Khadijah); six grandchildren Deja, Jade, Avery, Langston, Harper, Lainee and two great-grandchildren Easton and Jordan. As well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and loved ones.
