Virginia Inez Chapel, aged 70, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at The Christ Hospital surrounded by her family. She was born on October 7, 1953, in New York, NY, the only child of Inez Weekes and Emory Young. She may have been an only child, but she had plenty of cousins to grow up with and considered them to be her siblings. She was our New York City Girl, and with both beauty and brains, was a 1971 graduate of George Washington High School. Shortly after graduating high school and giving birth to her eldest son, Virginia relocated to the Midwest and found a home in Cincinnati, OH. She gave birth to another son in 1976, and with the help of family and dear friends she raised her boys and created a large “chosen family” for herself.
Virginia met and fell in love with Calvin Chapel of the West End of downtown Cincinnati in the mid-1980’s, and on April 1st, 1989, the couple married at Grace Episcopal Church. Virginia and Calvin Chapel officially blended their families that day, and together they spent the early years of their marriage raising Virginia’s two boys, and Calvin’s son and daughter. As the older kids grew into adulthood, Virginia and Calvin gave birth to another daughter together in August of 1994.
Virginia was a social butterfly who kept busy with multiple hobbies including sewing, bowling, fishing, gardening, cosmetics, and of course—shopping. She had many different jobs over the years, and she never met a stranger. Her outgoing and joyous personality lit up every room she entered. Virginia was proof that you can take the girl out of the city, but you can’t take the city out of the girl. She was savvy, resourceful, street-smart, and was a fierce protector of those she loved.
Virginia lived by the words “Faith Over Fear”. No matter what challenges life threw her way, Virginia remained trustful of the Lord, and often sought spiritual guidance through her Church and many prayer partners. She encouraged everyone to look to the Lord and trust in Him, always. In early 2019, Virginia began what would be the toughest battle of her life after facing some health issues. Over the years, her health declined but her faith only grew stronger. She fought courageously for over five years until the Lord reminded her to “Be still and know that I am God.” And when she was ready, Virginia let the Lord call her home to eternal peace and rest.
To her children and grandchildren, know that she loved you fiercely. To her family and loved ones, her bright and kindred spirit will be with you always. To her many friends and colleagues, thank you for creating countless memories with her. And to her loving husband, Calvin, “Well done, Good and Faithful Servant.”
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Inez Weekes and Emory Young. She is survived by her husband, Calvin Chapel, and their children Millard Thrower, Calvin Chapel Jr., Toussaint Thrower, Erin Chapel, and Darice Chapel. Grandchildren Jayla, Ollie Mae, Jamanuel, Jaylan, Jacob, Elijah, and Jayce. She is also survived by her Aunt and Godmother, Shirley Alma Callender, many close cousins, Siblings-in-Law, nieces, nephews, and Godchildren.
