Torrey Devonte Johnson, 28, of Cincinnati, gained his heavenly wings on July 31 2020. He was born June 24, 1992, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Titus K. Johnson and Shaureene Watson.
Torrey attended South Avondale Elementary and the Academy of World Languages in Cincinnati and later moved to Phoenix, Arizona with his father and attended Cooper Canyon High School. He had a vibrant personality and a huge smile that was contagious. Torrey was a gifted singer who loved to sing and was a huge gospel music fan. Under the tutelage of his grandmother Mamie Johnson, Torrey began leading songs at a very young at his family church, Rescue Temple Church of God in Christ, where his grandfather Samuel Johnson, Sr. was the pastor. The congregation loved to hear him sing “For the Rest of My Life” and “God’s Got a Blessing.”
Torrey was a founding member of the Cincinnati based youth choir Youth Grounded in Excellence (YGIE), which afforded him the opportunity to sing at the 2008 NAACP National Convention opening for President Barack Obama. Torrey loved music and vocal production, and went on to record songs with artists in Cincinnati and Phoenix.
He was preceded in death by his loving mother Shaureene Watson and his grandfather Samuel Johnson, Sr. He is survived by his father Titus K. Johnson of Phoenix, Arizona; Grandmother Mamie Johnson; three brothers Titus (Tori) Johnson II, Nashon Thomas, and Khaalid Thomas; sister Naomi Thomas; aunts Gwendolyn Johnson and Shaunda Watson; uncles Lawrence (Celeste) Johnson, Calvin (Sharon) Johnson, all of Cincinnati, Ohio; and uncles Gabriel Johnson and Roman (Masae) Johnson of Los Angeles, California; two nephews, many cousins and friends.
The visitation is from 12pm until 3pm on Thursday August 13, 2020 at the Thompson, Hall and Jordan Funeral Home.
