Ladies and gentlemen, family, and friends, we gather here today to celebrate the life of my big brother – Thomas Byrd Montgomery Jr. His passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, but we find solace in the memories we shared and the impact he had on our lives.
Tommy Jr. was more than a sibling; he was the one I would look up to, a model in growth, a partner and competitor in mischief, and most of all my firewall in shared challenges as kids. From building army forts in the backyard to late-night talks about dreams and fears, our brotherly bond was established. Our competitive natures developed through scholastics and sports such as football, basketball, track and tennis, but also the numerous brotherly one on one contests. His laughter echoed through our home or wherever he was, and his humor and kindness touched everyone he met.
Tommy had an insatiable curiosity and determination. Whether it was tinkering with gadgets, Hot Rods, Sports Cars, exploring the great outdoors, competing in team sports, or losing himself in a good book or comic books, he approached life with wonder. His passion for learning and occupational success was contagious, and he encouraged us to embrace opportunity and to strive for success. His love of music and especially the Blues was captivating, soothing and inviting to those new to the genre.
Tommy had a heart as vast as the ocean. He listened with empathy, offered comfort with recommendations, and stood by our side during life’s storms. His empathy knew no bounds, and he taught us the true meaning of compassion and love for family and friends. This was demonstrated during family gatherings, holiday celebrations, numerous barbeques and parties that not only were for enjoyment, but spawned discussions embracing culture, current events, family matters, career and other shared interests.
We embarked on countless adventures—trips to Georgia with Mom to visit Grandmother Riley, cousins, family, hiking rugged trails, going to James Bond movies, exploring museums, riding horses, camping under summer star-studded skies at Camp Meachum and fishing with dad. Tommy believed that life was meant to be lived fully, and he seized every moment and catapulted into maturity and independence. His adventurous spirit inspired us to take risks and savor life’s simple pleasures.
As we bid farewell to Tommy, let us remember the lessons he leaves behind. Cherish friend and family bonds, embrace curiosity, practice kindness, and seek quantitative purpose in life. His legacy lives on in our hearts, and we honor him by carrying forward the engagement and love he shared.
Thomas Byrd Montgomery Jr. you were more than a brother—you were a guiding light and an established inspiration. May your spirit soar among the stars with Mom and Dad, and may your memory be etched in our souls forever. Farewell, dear brother and friend. Until we meet again.
