Honoring Mama Thelma I am humbled by the opportunity to pay homage to such a special person. I have known Thelma Jean Barnes to have overcome challenges of all sizes throughout her ninety-one plus years. At the same time she managed to mentor, nurture, guide and love on a community of people. Her foot was cut off in 1949 in a car wreck which took the life of her cousin and best friend Wilma. It was thought that she would not live and some doctors believed that she at least would never be able to walk. Nevertheless, God provided a celestial intervention into an earthly situation and enabled an anointed doctor to fuse the bones of her foot and leg back together. Keep in mind that this was during a time when bone fusion as a whole was in its embryonic stages at best. She was left without an ankle socket leaving it permanently stiff. She developed a strut with a skip in it to conceal her limp and her inability to bend her foot. However, she was extremely active to the point where many never realized she was handicapped. She displayed her athletic abilities as an avid bowler for 44 years. She was a fundraiser extraordinaire. She facilitated style, hat, and fine fur shows. She also gave a honorary dinner for Pulitzer Prize Journalist: Clarence Page. She raised money for several church facilities at Second Baptist Church which included but not limited to a PA equipment, a HVAC system, and the church elevator. Perhaps her greatest accomplishment is that she cared for and loved on a countless number of motherless children and people in need by encouraging, teaching, coaching and providing them essentials during hard times. Mama Thelma provided love as grace but would not hesitate to provide doses of tough love when the situation required. She had a tenacity that seemed to move mountains. She valued life and genuinely enjoyed helping people. This was an effort she carried out as long as she could, and she did it with an incredibly positive spirit. The best way for me to honor the life of Thelma Jean Barnes is to face each day with the realization that the sun rose, and I rose, and that is a good day no matter what.
