Thaddeus Denthriff Memorial One of the Thad Stories In order to truly understand and appreciate the life and times of Mr. Thaddeus Denthriff, you also have to understand his role and relationships with fourteen other people in his life. Thad, as he was known in our family, was the first born grandson of Fred and Margaret Sanders. This is important because Margaret was the grandmother of fifteen grandchildren. As the matriarchal grandmother of all of her children’s children she knit a bond of love, respect, concern and cooperation among all fifteen of us. But most importantly she bestowed the laurel wreath of leadership and an example of how to live together as family on Thad. A laurel wreath throughout history has the connotation of prosperity, fame, being a winner and a leader. The laurel leaves stand for honor and the leaves extend beyond the inner border of the circle signifying vibrancy: growth, friendship, renewal and opportunity. Margaret was known to all fourteen of us grandchildren as Big Mama excepting Thad ; he alone called her Mama; and not be be confused with his birth mother who he called “Muh Dear”. As kid growing up I paid particular attention to this and over the years became more and more aware of the significance of this grandmother/grandson relationship. Over the course of my growing up with Thad I have to admit I was envious of his relationship with Big Mama because I thought and over time recognized that there was this special relationship between the two of them that did not exist between Big Mama and the other fourteen of us. Don’t misunderstand this observation because in addition to carrying the title of Big Mama, she also carried the depth and width of love for each one of her grandchildren in such a way that we each felt we were the special one in her life. In bestowing the laurel wreath on Thad I realize she was also giving him a huge responsibility that even if he did not understand it then he certainly successfully completed his assignments. All of the fifteen of us had two parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters and cousins and later nieces and nephews. That was a great family relationship but in addition to all of that each one of us had a special relationship with Thad. For all of us at some point or another he field the role of father, mother, uncle, aunt, sister, brother, friend, or confidant; and he did it with such aplomb that you didn’t even know that he had stepped into that role until later reflection. There is pleasure in my heart because the last time I spoke with Thad which was a face time just a few days before his transition I was able to say to him the things that I am saying to you this morning. I am so grateful that I did this sharing on two occasions once several years ago when we had a telephone conversation and were talking about family history the various roles people had played in our lives and the second time as I mentioned a few days ago. Throughout my entire relationship with Thad, he never let me down; I cannot speak for the other but this morning I cannot tell you a story where one of them were disheartened, disenfranchised or disgruntled with our cousin Thad. Of the fifteen of Big Mama’s grandchildren, there are now eight surviving Frederica, Semon, Camillia, Chester, Jr., Roger, Fannie, Kenneth and Cheri. I join with them recognizing and holding up Thad for the life he lived, for the family he made, for the love he gave but most of all for being there for each of us throughout all of our lives. Finally, I know in my heart and I hope in the hearts of all of those gathered this morning that we all know we have been blessed and graced by having known and been impacted by the life lived by Mr. Thaddeus Denthriff. Thank you. Chester Hines, Jr.
