Sylvia was a woman of boundless love and joy, known not only for her gentle spirit and generous heart but also for her infectious laughter. Her spirit could brighten the darkest of days. Her sense of humor and love for life were contagious, bringing joy to everyone fortunate enough to share in her company. She had a unique gift for finding humor in life’s simplest moments and her laughter would echo in the hearts of those who knew her.
She was a devout Christian and truly loved the Lord. She joined the New Prospect Baptist church under Reverend T. L. Lane at an early age. Sylvia remained active under Pastor Damon Lynch III until her health started to fail. Sylvia was a member of the church’s Mission department and Eastern Stars.
She graduated from Taft High School and attended two years of Community College. Sylvia was a Nursing Assistant on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Once she retired she was very active in her community. She was a caregiver for elderly/disabled people, a Foster Grandparent through Cincinnati Public Schools and heavily involved with the Bond Hill Beautification Committee. Later she worked with the Hamilton County Board of Elections.
Sylvia was an excellent cook and always prepared a big Sunday meal. Everyone was always welcome to eat at her table. Her famous “Football Salmon Croquettes” were always a menu staple. Sylvia loved being outdoors and learning new things.
Her love extended beyond her family and friends to the many animals she cared for throughout her life. Sylvia had a deep, unwavering affection for all creatures great and small. The compassion she had for animals was a testament to her kind and nurturing nature. Her home was a place where love was shared freely among people and pets.
Sylvia lived a life filled with love, laughter, and kindness. She was the heartbeat of her family, the source of endless joy and comfort, and her memory will live on in the stories, smiles, and love of all who were touched by her remarkable spirit.
She was the youngest of ten children and was preceded in death by mother, Josie Brown Butts and father Clinton L. Butts; devoted companion Randy Wallace; Brothers Junious Butts, Melvin Brown, and Willie (Louise) Dawson; Sisters Rudy Tolbert, Margarite Butts, Thelma Butts Brantley, Velma Brown, and Maggie Brown Marshall. Sylvia leaves in God’s hands to cherish her memories her older sister Lucy Brown Jones; Nieces Elaine Brantley, Kimberly (Troy) Washington, Michele (Walter) Moore, Carolyn (Martin) Booker, Darlene Dawson, and Clarice Tolbert; Nephews R. Torrance Jones, Albert Brantley Jr., Philip (Bobbi) Brantley, Rodney Marshall, Derrick (Andreanetti) Marshall, Marvin (Tabitha) Butts, Terry Rogers, Charles Tolbert and many great and great- great nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She also leaves behind special sisters, niece and cousin who were very close to her heart Alfreda B. James, Denise “Dee Dee” Freeman, Vernita Powell, Yolanda Waldon and Ella Davis.
