Shirley was fiercely independent. A few years ago, I visited her at Drake Rehabilitation Center after she had suffered a mild stroke. She told me that some of the patients had been asked to cut and slice various fruits and vegetables as a type of occupational therapy. She had been asked to dice a mango. She did not fulfill this duty. She informed the supervisor, "I did not come here to cook."
