Ruth Lee Payne, born December 1, 1928 to Mattie Hut-ton, was raised by Mattie, stepfather, Rev. Henry Pepper and grandmother, Cora Lee in Lincoln Heights.
Confirmed as a child at the St. Simon’s of Cyrene Episcopal Church, she later united with the Mt. Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, Jr. Throughout her life, she remained a churchgoer, in recent years attending Friday morning service at Maple Knoll Village, Bodman Pavilion.
In the larger community, Ruthie is loved and respected for her service and dedication to programs and special events through The National Bowling Association (TNBA) in organizing junior bowler events. Events such as The Celebrity Bowl Tournament, the Gospel Fest and fundraisers for Sickle Cell Awareness were three of her signature legacies.
While her accomplishments are too many to list, a few include Wayfarer?s Mother of the Year Award, TNBA’s Mary L. Wilkes Award, and the Women’s International Bowling Congress (WIBC) Greater Cincinnati Women’s Bowling Association (WBA) Hall of Fame, and City of Cincinnati Ruth L. Payne Day Proclamation. Others include awards, recognitions and resolutions issued by state and national government officials and leaders.
Her legacy is memorialized in her arts and crafts. Ruthie’s talents and creativity are expressed through her Payne’s Parlor knitted hats, scarves, shawls, afghans and flowers and her beaded jewelry. She is remembered warmly by each who enjoys her special creations and regular participation in Maple Knoll?s BINGO and recitals events.
Ruthie was preceded in death by her husband and best friend, James Cordova Payne. She is survived by: “sister-friend” Josephine Thomas; her five children, Karen (Malcolm) Helton, James Hutton, Marilyn (Rance) Duke, Cynthia (William) Batte and Douglas (Bronwyn) Payne; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great- grandchildren. She leaves cherished nieces and nephews in her Payne and Christmon families, “sisters” and a host of friends and colleagues.
