Bishop Raleigh Lee, Jr. was born on Sunday, October 20, 1935, on Dunlap Street in Statesboro, Georgia, to the late Deacon Raleigh Lee, Sr. and Minister Alice Smith Lee. He was the 5th of twelve children. He attended Willow Hill Elementary School and Willow Hill Junior High School in Bulloch County, Georgia. During his childhood, Bishop Lee sang with his family and family friends as the “Starlight Pilgrim Jubilees”. The gospel group performed live on Statesboro radio station WWNS on Sunday mornings for four years. The family moved to Ohio in 1955. Bishop Lee was joined in holy matrimony to Theola Johnson on October 11, 1958. To this union four children were born, Gary, Vicki, Cynthia, and Kevin.
Bishop Lee attended Berean Bible Institute in Cincinnati, Muskegon Bible Institute in Michigan, and later, Bethel Bible College in Cincinnati, where he received his doctorate degree.
Bishop Lee joined Mt. Olive Church in Lincoln Heights, Ohio in 1956 under the pastorate of Bishop Foy O. Munlin. Bishop Lee acknowledged his calling into the ministry in 1959.
Bishop Lee became an entrepreneur as the sole proprietor of the “Lee’s One-Hour Dry Cleaners” business in Walnut Hills in 1967.
Bishop Lee founded his first church, Bethesda Holy Temple, with his devoted wife, the late Elder Theola Lee, in 1968. His three older children, Gary, Vicki, and Cynthia began singing in the church at the ages of three, five, and six. They were known as the “Rosebud Singers”. Later, when Kevin joined the group, they became “The Angelic Four”.
Bishop Lee was ordained Bishop in 1984; and later became the founder of Bethesda Community Churches (BCC) of the Apostolic Faith. He has also helped to establish eight other churches in various states.
Bishop Raleigh, Lee Jr. was preceded in death by his wife, Elder Theola Johnson Lee, his daughter, Vicki Lee-Baker, his parents, Deacon Raleigh Lee, Sr., and Alice M. Smith Lee; four brothers, District Elder Paul (Adele) Lee, Dr. David Lee, Bishop James Lee, Sr., (Earlene), and Bishop Smith Alton Lee (Rachel); six sisters, Geneva (Raleigh, Sr.) Folston, Malinda (Ernest) Kendricks, Betty Jane Lee, Eunice Lee, Magalene Lee, and Jewelene Lee.
Bishop Raleigh Lee, Jr. leaves to cherish his memory two sons, Bishop Gary C. (Rosalyn) Lee, Kevin Lee, two daughters Lenora Davis and Elder Cynthia (Henry) Shropshire, one sister, Dr. Mary A. Williams, twelve grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and his church family at New Mt. Olive.
