Millie Audrey Jordan left this life for her Heavenly reward on October 9, 2014. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio at home to Rachel Durham and Artie Simmons on March 31, 1926. Millie was educated within the Cincinnati Public School District. She attended Dyer Elementary, Bloom Junior High and graduated from Wood- ward High School on August 14, 1944. Her education was furthered at Poro Beauty College with a Cosmetology Diploma in 1947. She worked in several department stores and later in her mother’s hair salon as a licensed Manicurist.
On September 17, 1950, Millie was united in holy matrimony to the late Edward Jordan, Jr. To this union, they bore five children: Jeffrey, Angela, Jonathan, Andrea and Quintin. As an involved parent, Millie volunteered at almost every school her children attended. She received an award by the CPS Superintendent for completing the leadership institute for her work with the special needs population.
Millie was a devoted member of St. John A.M.E. Zion Church, where she served the Lord by working in various capacities. She was a life member with the Missionary Society, she sang in the Acapella Choir (directed by Bro. Richard Bush), she worked with the YAMS, with BUDS of Promise, the Christian Education Depart- ment and as the VBS Director, then as the Church Secretary.
Millie and her late husband were pillars of the community and trailblazers for their work with the Boy Scouts of America. Their efforts were recognized by the Dan Beard Council and Millie was awarded the Meritorious Service Award in 1980 and later the Silver Beaver Award in 1984. The legacy they left has been a lasting impress- sion due to their heavy presence within African American neighborhoods.
In her own way, Millie ministered to and encouraged women of all walks of life to want more for themselves. Commonly referred to as the “oldest teenager” because of how light on her feet she was, Millie could be found sur- rounded by young people. Her favorite activities included walking, jumping rope, gardening, teaching and crafts. She mastered being a domestic engineer; was an avid seamstress, did alterations and she took delight in designing clothes. Millie will truly be missed by many as she touched lives of people within her sphere of influence.
Millie was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Jordan, Jr.; mother, Rachel A. Haynes; twin brother, Billie Simmons; and younger brother, Henry Haynes. She leaves to cherish her memory: all five children, Jeffery (Shirley), Angela Denson, Jonathan (Sharon), Andrea and Quintin (Ramenia); 13 grandchildren, Leslie Irvin, Andrea Denson, Ayana Garrett (James), Jessica Jordan, Jeffrey Jordan, Jr., Adolph Denson III, Arties Russell III, Quintina Jordan, Clarianne Hayes, Andreana Jordan, Quintin Jordan, Jr., Azriel Jordan and David Jordan, five great-grandchildren and one on the way; a sister- in-love, Marilyn Jordan; a host of cousins (her Special Valentines), friends and church family; and mention goes to the Good News Church Family.
