Melvin Young, Jr. was born January 6, 1928 to Earthel Gray and Melvin Young, Sr. He attended Lockland Wayne High School where he graduated in 1948. Melvin was a member of the Lockland Wayne basket- ball team and football team. He later attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and Morristown College in Morristown, Tennessee where he also played football. He was later drafted into the Armed Forces where he served in the Korean Conflict.
Melvin was baptized at Mt. Zion Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. Coleman.
Melvin was a lifetime member of the Queen City Elks Lodge in Lockland until his health failed.
Melvin married Joan Smith on April 7, 1951. To this union were born five children: Eric (Stacey), Karen (James), Jones, Vernita, Shelly (Otis) Pollard and Andre Young; 10 grandchildren, Shanta, Melanie, Rachelle (Mario) Green, Ryann, Candace, Kevin, Ashley, JoAnna, Jada and Andre Jr.; four great-grandchildren; three nieces, Carol Cousins, Adrienne Howard and Stephanie Perry; one nephew, Harry Howard, Jr.; a sister, Carolyn White; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Howard.
