Mattie Jean Milton was born in Montgomery, LA., to Albert Sr. & Lovie Nash. She was one of twelve children born in the family. Mattie attended Grambling State University where she was an Honor Roll student. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Mattie also attended the University of Toledo and received her Masters of Education degree in Guidance and Counseling. She did further studies at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI.
Mattie has been a resident in Cincinnati, OH since 1980. She was married to Charley Milton Jr. and they have a son Carlton Milton who resides in Columbus, OH. Over the course of Mattie’s career she worked in four different Public School Systems as a Coordinator of Student Affairs, Attendance Officer, Home Economics Teacher and School Counselor. She retired from the Cincinnati Public School system and immediately involved herself in church and community volunteering to help others.
In addition to serving on Non-Profit Boards, Mattie has volunteer as a “patient representative” for Bethesda North Hospital. She has served as a Regional Advocate for the Ohio District of Church World Services, and has participated in missionary trips. In addition to her many projects, she has completing over 1,500 school bags/filled with school supplies for distribution to underdeveloped area schools in Africa. Mattie also serves as a Nursing Home Advocate for Senior Citizens. Patients often refer to her as the “Angel Lady”. In addition, she has crocheted more than 500 pink caps and donated to cancer patients in three medical facilities.
For several years, Mattie served on the Steward Board as well as the Chairperson of the Senior Adult Ministry at Quinn Chapel AME Church. In working with Seniors, she developed field trips to parks, museums, arts & crafts shows, quilting shows as well as theatre presentations. Mattie loves working and developing programs to enrich the lives of Senior Adults. Some of the Ministries she has developed include: “The Crafty Christians” and “The Gathering of the Arts” events. Mattie also completed training and has been certified as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), for Foster Children. As a CASA volunteer, she worked directly with children in foster care, to make sure they are safe and their needs were being met.
Mattie’s hobbies include sewing, quilting, making porcelain dolls and arts & crafts. Her motto for life is, “If I can help somebody as I pass along the way, then my living shall not be in vain”. Mattie volunteered in various activities, passing on her skills to others.
Mattie Jean Milton is preceded in death by: Charley Milton Jr. (husband), Albert Sr. and Lovie Nash (parents), 11 sisters and brothers, Sarah Nash, Clara Anthony, Rosie Tucker, Emma Muriel Malone, Hattie Gordon, Mary Green, Victoria Howell, Aaron Nash, Louis Vernon Nash and Fred Nash.
Mattie leaves to mourn one son Carlton Anthony Milton (Gina Marie), two sister-in-laws, one brother-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and acquaintances.
