MATTIE B. AUSTIN, world’s greatest Cook, and Mother, departed this life suddenly during the afternoon hours of Wednesday, November 4th, 2020.
She leaves to mourn her passing, her loving husband of 52 years, Julius Austin; her children; Donzell Austin, Ellis Austin, preceded in death, Phillip Hargrove; her grandchildren, Nicole Spencer, Jacob Macon, and her great grandchildren; Isaiah Spencer, Adam Plummer Jr., Zyaire Plummer, Aiden Plummer; her siblings, preceded in death, Murray Hargrow, Lillie Bell, Willie Lee Hargrow, Elizabeth Lyons, Jarmon Hargrow Jr., Ida Bee Smith, Canzie Armstrong, Ruby Long, Mary Less Hargrow, Monroe Hargrow, James Hargrow, Susie Wells, Sara Lee Hargrow, Eurice Hargrove, and among the living, Annie Grace Austin. She also leaves to cherish her memory, a host of family, and friends who loved her dearly.
Mattie was born of the union between Jarmon Sr. and Susie Hargrow, in Panola Alabama, on September 20th, 1938. She was named after her Grandmother. At an early age, she gave her life to Christ. Mattie finished high school in Robinsonville, Mississippi, and moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1959. Soon, in 1960, she met Julius, and they later married, and made a family.
Mattie worked as a cook at various restaurants in the city, including the famed Demetrio’s Greek Restaurant downtown, and Louis’ Barbeque, in Newport Kentucky. Cooking was her passion. She loved to cook, because she was good at it.
She was at her happiest, when she was in the kitchen, cooking meals, and later observing, as others smiled, and enjoyed eating what she had prepared. THAT, brought joy to her soul. She was born to cook.
