Our beloved Mary was born on June 4, 1939, in Wahalak, Mississippi and heard the words well done my good and faithful servant on May 22, 2023. She is predeceased by her father, Howard Cowan Sr., mother, Johnie Mae Benion-Cowan, and brother, Howard Cowan Jr. Mary is survived by her cousins and a myriad of friends.
After graduating from Robert A. Taft High School in 1958, Mary pursued other educational interests by attending the University of Cincinnati for primary education, obtaining a data processing certificate from the College of Automation, and a PC specialist program certificate, from the Career Blazers Learning Center. Her educational accomplishments and desire to be a life-long learner allowed her to have a thirty-year career at McAlpin/Mercantile as a Data Processor.
In 1942 Mary began attending Peace Baptist Church and joined the church seven years later in 1949. For 60 years she used her gift of playing the piano for Sunday School and visited the sick. The members of Peace Baptist were not the only ones who had the pleasure of enjoying her musical talent. Mary also played for Roberson Christian Church of Covington, Kentucky, which led her to being on WKRC Channel 12, Moore Ensemble Gospel Group and Christ Memorial Baptist Church.
Mary loved serving at her church but that was not her only passion. She joined the Order of Eastern Star, under the guidance of her father Howard Cowan, and this became her passion too. Following her mother’s legacy as members of OES, Mary would be a member for 63 years and doing those many years she would several leadership positions. Her commitment to OES was demonstrated when she donated to Star of Faith #69 OES which enabled her to continue supporting throughout her illness.
Mary’s acts of service extended to her East Clifton community, colleagues, friends, and family. It is through these interactions that Mary expressed her love for others, shared her opinions, love for the Reds, and brought joy to so many lives.
