Marie Mack Berry Butler was born February 1, 1926 to the late Fannie (Mack) Berry and Dewey Berry in Paris, Kentucky. The third of four siblings, she was the only girl. Marie was called home to Heaven in the comfort of her home on the evening of Friday, July 7, 2023. She was 97 years old.
When Marie was nine years old, her mother passed away. Her father would go on to marry Hattie Woodford Berry who absolutely adored Marie and nicknamed her “Honey.” The loss of her birth mother was difficult but Marie and Hattie formed a lifelong mother/daughter bond lasting until Hattie’s passing in 2009.
Marie was united in marriage to Eugene Butler Jr. on October 11, 1947. They were married 53 years until his untimely passing in 2000. True soulmates, they shared a unique bond that went beyond their union. Both were born on the same day, in the same year, and delivered by the same doctor. The doctor is said to have delivered Eugene and then upon learning of another baby on the way, rushed across town to deliver Marie.
As a young adult, Marie graduated from Paris Western High School and went on to attend Kentucky State College where she majored in Home Economics. Following college, her and Eugene would begin growing their family, residing in Covington, KY, before finding permanent residence in Glendale, OH. A devoted mother and homemaker, Marie cherished caring for her children and later her grandchildren. Her household was always a place of welcome and warmth; serving as the hub for holidays and family gatherings.
A perpetual learner, Marie was an avid reader and writer. It was very common to find her penning answers to crossword puzzles and journaling her daily activities in the calendars she acquired each year. Marie was an excellent cook and baker; her family and friends looked forward to her various dishes and could count on her generosity to share anything she prepared. Some of her particular specialties included macaroni salad, jello salad, chess bars, jam cake and butter rolls. She was also a talented seamstress. Often mending clothes for her family and designing fashionable homemade garments for her daughters and granddaughters.
Marie had a fondness for nature. When outside, she enjoyed throwing scraps of bread to the birds and squirrels as well as watching them from her bedroom window. Her deep passion for gardening was displayed by her meticulous lawn care and the beautiful flowers she planted. Perhaps her greatest outdoor pleasure was sitting in her porch swing. Visitors to her home could often find her sitting peacefully in her swing relishing the fresh air and welcoming you to join her.
