Lucinda “Cindy” Thornton was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She left this world on March 20, 2024 at the age of 90 years old.
She was born to Lucious and Annie Allen on August 9, 1933 in Tallassee Alabama – the eighth of fourteen children. She gave her life to Jesus Christ at an early age at Flat Rock Baptist Church. After graduating from high school, Lucinda came to Cincinnati, where she met and later married Rev. Woodrow W. Thornton. To this union were born two daughters, Priscilla and Susan. Later in life she raised two grandchildren Eric and Bridgette who meant everything to her. Her family was the most important thing in the world to her.
Also of the utmost importance to Lucinda was her relationship with Jesus! Upon coming to Cincinnati in the 1950’s she united with Gallilee Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. J.C. Scruggs. Later Rev. & Sis Thornton joined and served at First Liberty Baptist Church pastored by Rev. Floyd Rosser. She later joined Morning Star Baptist Church under Pastor Calvin Harper until his passing and then under Rev. Jerome Clay. At each church she served faithfully and willingly. Whether in teaching, singing, or helping in the kitchen or planning church events – she did it wholeheartedly until she couldn’t.
Lucinda loved everybody, she never met a stranger or ever greeted anybody without that warm and welcoming smile. Everybody was “Sugar”, “Sweetie”, “Baby” or “Honey”. If you ever spent time at her house, it always felt like home. She was always in the kitchen – that was the gathering space – and she always offered you something to eat or drink. Lucinda was volunteering for one thing or the other, she never based her willingness to help on her resources, convenience or time. She believed we represented Jesus to the world by our giving of ourselves in service to and caring for others – because that’s what Jesus did. Amen!
She is survived by her daughters, Priscilla V. and Susan A. Thornton, and grandchildren (Eric J. Thornton and Bridgette R. Givens). She is also survived by her last sibling Frances Johnson Eiland (New York), goddaughter Gluchia Harris, a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and many others who were like family.
She was preceded in transition by her husband, Rev. Woodrow W. Thornton , her mother Annie Allen and father, Lucious Allen; her brothers, Joe, Robert, Warren, Lucious, Arthur and Willie Allen, her sisters: Marie (Henderson), Lelia (Milbry), Josie (Sistrunk), Marion (Choate), Edmonia (Rich) and Dollie (Brown).
