Karl Douglas Hicks Sr. was born on August 3, 1962, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to loving parents Willie D. Hicks and Florene I. Hicks. He peacefully departed this life on July 5, 2026, at Scarlet Oaks Healthcare Center Cincinnati, Ohio.
Karl was educated in the Cincinnati Public School system and attended Withrow High School, where his love of football began. A talented athlete, he played for all four years of high school, earning numerous accolades and recognition. After graduating in 1981, his dedication and hard work earned him an athletic scholarship to Tennessee State University. Karl dreamed of playing professional football in the NFL, but a college injury brought his football career to an unexpected end.
After returning home, Karl found a new purpose for serving others. He worked with underprivileged and at-risk youth at the Stay Center and later at St. Joseph Orphanage/Altercrest Campus for teenage boys. He poured his heart into mentoring, counseling, and encouraging young men, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives. His compassion, patience, and commitment to helping others will long be remembered.
Karl cherished spending time with his family and friends. He was happiest gathered around the barbecue grill, sharing laughter, telling jokes, and making everyone smile. Known by many as the family jokester, Karl had a gift for lifting spirits, even on the toughest days. Many believed he missed his true calling as a stand-up comedian because his sense of humor brought joy wherever he went.
A man of many talents, Karl could fix just about anything. He learned those skills from his father and became the person family and friends could always count on when something needed repair. His willingness to help others was simply part of
Although Karl and Doris Hudspeth never married, they shared a loving relationship for 16 years and were blessed with three children: Karl D. Hicks Jr., Devin L. Hicks, and Kaylyn D. Hicks. His children were the pride and joy of his life.
Karl was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Elmira Hicks, Florine Saddler, and Virginia Hicks; and his nephew, Aaron Spruell.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved children, his siblings, Richard Rucker, Deborah Pilgram (Michael), Christopher Hicks (Gloria), Luvenia Spruell, Constance Hicks, and Paul Hicks; along with a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by his love, laughter, and generosity.
Karl’s legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. His kindness, humor, strength, and unwavering love for family will never be forgotten. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
