Josephine Essex Robertson was born February 23, 1931 in Demopolis, Alabama. Her parents were Nathan McGrew and Rosa Nell Essex. During her teenage years she moved to Gadsden, Alabama. She accepted Christ and was baptized at First Baptist Church. She attended George Washington Carver High School and graduated in 1949.
In 1950, she married Willie Robertson. Four children were born from this union. Due to better job opportunities, the family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1952. The family united with Jerriel Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend A.L. Goodwin.
When the family moved to Bond Hill, they united with Tryed Stone Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Anderson Culbreath, where she was a very dedicated servant. She attended The Tribe of Judah Bible Class, served in the Missionaries, Keenagers, and Nurses’ Guild. Later Apostle Jerry Culbreth became the “Set Man” and the church was changed to Tryed Stone New Beginning Church. After 25 years of dedicated service, Josephine retired from Christ Hospital in 1994. Blessed with a reasonably healthy life, she enjoyed reading, studying God’s word, cooking, entertaining relatives and friends, shopping and traveling.
Josephine is preceded in death by two sisters, one brother, her oldest grandson, and a son-in-law, whom she considered to be her son. She leaves to cherish her memory; three daughters, Sherrilyn E. Jackson, Theresa Norwood (Clifton) and Kathy Robertson; one son, Carlos Robertson (Shawnia); two sisters from New York, Carol Essex and Louise Jones; nine grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, loving nieces and nephews, extended family members and loving friends.
