Johanna L. Byrd, age 93, went home to be with the Lord on December 30, 2025 embraced by the love of her family and the everlasting peace of her faith. Though her earthly journey has come to a close, her compassion, her music, and her unwavering devotion to God continue to shine through the countless lives she touched.
Johanna was born on June 18, 1932 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Mary E. Coleman (Ward) and Wilbur H. Ward, Sr. Raised in a home grounded in faith, Johanna developed a deep love for God and a natural gift for caring for others — qualities that would define her life’s purpose.
From her earliest days, she championed and supported those she loved, and maintained a compassionate spirit — her heart was always inclined toward service.
Johanna attended Harriett Beecher Stowe elementary school and went on to graduate from Walnut Hills School. Johanna pursued her calling in healthcare and became a Licensed Practical Nurse, graduating from the University of Cincinnati LPN program. Johanna worked at Drake Hospital for 11 years and at Deaconess Hospital for 27 years. Throughout her years of service, she worked with dedication and tenderness, offering comfort, dignity, and hope to her patients. Whether in moments of crisis or quiet care, Johanna’s presence brought reassurance. Her colleagues admired her steady grace, and families often expressed gratitude for the compassion she extended to their loved ones. Nursing was more than her profession — it was her ministry.
Johanna was a lifelong and devoted member of Allen Temple AME Church where she served in the choir and innumerable organizations and capacities.
Music was one of several of Johanna’s God-given gifts. She was blessed with a rich and coveted 1st soprano voice. Her singing was more than melody; it was ministry. Whether lifting hymns of praise or songs of encouragement, Johanna’s voice had a way of filling hearts with warmth and drawing listeners closer to God. Many will forever remember the peace and joy her music brought into their lives.
Johanna sang at many churches and events across Cincinnati, often with her mother, Mary Ward. She was a frequent vocalist at her husband’s home church – Zion Baptist Church. Johanna sang regularly in the citywide choir performing Handel’s Messiah and Cincinnati’s local church collaboration with the Cincinnati Opera — Opera Goes to Church. She performed the part of “Neighbor” in A Streetcar Named Desire in the 14th season of the Edgecliff Theater, and performed regularly with the Baroque Chorale Ensemble.
Throughout her lifetime, Johanna received numerous awards and accolades – including the 2011 Beta Zeta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.’s Amicae Member of the Year award as well as several recognitions as The Honored Elder in Kwanzaa celebrations.
Johanna cherished her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years (and childhood friend), Robert L. Byrd and her brother, Wilber H. Ward, Jr. She is survived by her sister Maridee W. Robinson (Ward); Son Michael Byrd; Daughter-in-Law Betryn Byrd (Dove); Granddaughter Jessica Byrd; Grandson David Byrd; Great Grandsons Erik Byrd, George Silcott
III, and N’Kijah Archibald; Great Granddaughters Laura Byrd and Aurora Byrd; and a many cherished relatives from the Monroe/Byrd and Coleman/Ward/Anderson lineages. Many friends and relatives will forever carry her memory in their hearts.
Johanna leaves behind a legacy of compassion, service, music, and faith — a life lived with purpose and love. Though she will be deeply missed, her family and friends rejoice in knowing she is now at rest in the presence of her Savior, a Songbird singing with the heavenly choir.
