JoAnn Elayne Boyd, affectionately known as “Jo,” was born on December 1st, 1964. Born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, or brittle bone disease, her fragile bones created multiple breaks; including 25 fractures before she was even born!
JoAnn’s condition resulted in ongoing physical challenges and numerous surgeries over the course of her lifetime. She rejected expressions from others of pity or sorrow, because of her disability. It was simply a contradiction to the essence of her being.
Against all odds, JoAnn pushed forward with extraordinary courage, commitment and tenacity. She ran circles around the most successful “able-bodied person.” Her closest friends have testified that JoAnn did practically everything that everyone else did–except walk or run.
JoAnn was born and completed her elementary education in Chicago. Later the family moved to Indiana and finally to Glendale, Ohio. Glendale is where they settled and remained for many years. JoAnn attended and graduated from both Princeton Junior High and High schools.
She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Communications from Wright State University, in Dayton, Ohio. Afterwards, our “boss lady” worked for many years at Anthem Insurance Company; in their marketing division. There, she detailed Anthem’s numerous insurance packages, handled inquiries, trained personnel and designed and oversaw the company newsletter.
Bestowed with a natural skill and talent for writing, she constructed resumes for friends and created advertising and promotional materials, as a favor for small businesses or personal needs. She also crocheted, loved reading books and magazines, relished watching classic old movies and traveling with friends.
JoAnn was a foodie, who often mentioned she enjoyed eating good food more than cooking it. Ironically, she still made delicious signature dishes; homemade mac & cheese, sweet potato pie, and fat, juicy, turkey burgers. She loved that we loved her meals.
She frequently discussed the support of her family, from which she drew strength. But, Jo was a force to be reckoned with in her own right, to all who knew her.
A voracious worker in all aspects of life, our beloved girl was a fighter, a risk-taker, and a fearless warrior. But, even Jo, the fiercest of warriors had grown weary. Jesus said it was time to call his daughter into her heavenly home. He led her there quietly and peacefully, on Thursday, January 29th, 2026.
JoAnn is survived by her parents, Joyce Voorhees and David Boyd and her sisters, Susan and Karen. Her cousins, the Cochrans, Kings, Mensers, Carpenters’ and her former church family at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, in Glendale, Ohio.
Her sister Susan, joined Compass Community Church of Springdale, less than a year ago. She frequently spoke of JoAnn to some congregants. Though JoAnn expressed a desire to visit Compass, time ran out and it wasn’t to be.
When Compass Church received word of JoAnn’s passing, the congregation wrapped their arms around Susan. They supported her with prayer, encouraging words, hugs, gift cards and assistance from every angle.
Pastor Dorrien graciously offered a space in the church for JoAnn’s memorial service and repast. We are especially grateful to Compass Church for their incredible kindness and generosity at this time.
JoAnn’s family expresses our deep appreciation, gratitude and thanks to each and every one of you. We cherish the role you had in our girl’s life. She loves you dearly and so do we. Your compassion, prayers and support are immeasurable. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to The Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation (OIF).
