James Walker Smiley, Jr. was born on April 18, 1952, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was the oldest of four children born to the union of the late Lillian Anderson Smiley and James Walker Smiley, Sr. He was known as Jimmy, James, or Smiley to those who knew him. James departed this earthly life on May 25, 2026.
He was baptized at an early age at Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church and continued his love of Jesus Christ through different churches.
James attended Douglas Elementary School, then Woodlawn Elementary School. He graduated from Princeton High School and post high school he attended University of Notre Dame and the University of Cincinnati.
He started his career as an accountant, earned his LPA “Licensed Public Accountant” professional designation and started his own company named Smiley Economic Enterprises. He spent most of his working career and retired from the United States Postal Service. After retirement he volunteered several years at the Healing Center for his church which was Vineyard Cincinnati Church.
For relaxation and exercise, James became a runner and later ran a few Cincinnati Flying Pig marathons. He also enjoyed bowling, once winning a league championship with the Pacesetters in 1981. His favorite traveling spot was Jamaica where he went for many years.
He was preceded in death by his in death by his beloved parents, Lillian and James Smiley, Sr. He leaves to mourn his passing are his loving sisters: Carolyn Smiley-Robertson (Tommie), Gloria Smiley and Jacqueline Smiley, his nephews, Kevin Robertson (Camille), Michael Robertson (Curisha) and Tommie Robertson Jr. (Margo). Also, mourning him is his bonus family: the Barwicks: Tina Barwick, Toni Barwick, Roy Barwick and a host of grandchildren; and good friend Julia Caulton. Additionally, a host of cousins and friends will mourn his death.
