Our family’s journey began on Thursday, June 16, 1933, with the birth of Jack Edward Bracey, the seventh child and fifth son of Moses Henry and Sarah Jefferson Bracey in Hinds County in the City of Jackson, Mississippi. Jack was one of seven Bracey sons, four of whom proudly served together during World War II—a reflection of a family deeply rooted in duty, sacrifice, and quiet strength.
Jack accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Big Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson by Pastor R. G. Bolden, where he faithfully served until the family relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio. His faith was a guiding force, woven into the very fabric of his life.
In Jackson, a love story began to blossom when Jack met Ellen. They were united in marriage on Tuesday, March 3, 1954, in their pastor’s garden—a simple yet profound setting that would symbolize their lifelong covenant. Their union flourished for more than 70 years, carrying them through the miles and seasons of life with grace and resilience. In 1956, they made Cincinnati their home, establishing a life grounded in faith, family, and perseverance. From this sacred union, six children were born and nurtured.
Jack initially worked in construction before moving into fire mitigation services, and then later he worked at Southern Baptist Church. Ron, his son, and Jack co-founded R & J Construction, a small family-owned business, solidifying a legacy of hard work and familial bonds. Jack’s retirement job was supervising the R&J Grandsons Summer Crew, made up of six grandsons (Chuck, David, Brandon, Matthew, Ron & Justin) who ate more than they worked and expected to be paid.
In 1968, the family joined Southern Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. James E. Milton, where Jack became a respected member of the Deacon Board and served steadfastly until his illness and passing. His faith was not loud but steadfast—steady as a drumbeat, constant as breath.
In 2000, Jack suffered a heart attack that could have slowed another man; however, he rose, recovered, and continued leading his family for more than 26 additional years—a quiet testament to his extraordinary endurance.
On Monday, February 16, 2026, after a brief illness, the Lord gently called him home.
He leaves behind a cherished legacy, including daughters Patricia, Elayne, Deborah, Stephanie (Steven), and Rosa (Clarence); sons Charles (Sheila) and Ronald; his youngest brother, Odell (Corrine); and his devoted sister-in-law, Peggy. A patient and loving grandfather, he leaves an incredible lineage of over 44 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, all carrying forth his legacy. He is also fondly remembered by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, church family, extended family, and dear friends.
And yes—family means all family. We remember with smiles their faithful four-legged companion, Sugar, who preceded him in death and likely welcomed him at the gate.
Family was the cornerstone of Jack’s life. The breadth of those who loved him, and whom he loved in return, is the true measure of his existence—not defined by titles or wealth, but by his unwavering presence, steadfastness, and his ability to show up, time and time again.
