Harold Waller, affectionately known as Sonny, died on Wednesday, July 15, 2015. He was born on November 14, 1929 in Cincinnati, Ohio and was the oldest of three children born to Elizabeth Head.
Harold was heavily influenced in his formative years by his uncle, John Waller, who always stressed the importance of education. Harold graduated from Woodward High School in June 1948. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1950 and served as a hospital corpsman. After he was honorably discharged in August 1954, Harold attended the University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in July 1958 and was inducted into the College of Pharmacy Honor Society.
In April 1959, Harold opened his own pharmacy, Ideal Pharmacy, in Walnut Hills which served the community for over 50 years. He was presented a certificate of achievement by the African American Chamber of Commerce in September 2001 for outstanding contributions to the City of Cincinnati and for providing more than 30 years of service, leadership and guidance in the African American Business Community.
Harold never married, but the love of his life was Luvenia “Venie” Huff. She was by his side throughout his life and illness.
Harold loved cars, dogs, baseball, his rental property and people. He would take time out of his busy schedule to talk to anyone who came into the pharmacy. He also loved being surrounded by his family. He had great fun at Sharon and Jerry’s house during the holidays and at family reunion cookouts.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Head; his father, Alexander Head; sister, Shirley Green; brother-in-law, Cleon Green; aunts, Bessye Johnson and Mattie Walker; uncles, John and Ernest Waller; and his grandparents, Big Momma and Daddy Banks.
Harold leaves not to mourn, but to cherish 85 years of loving memories: his loving companion, Venie Huff; brothers, James Head and Paul Head; nieces, Sharon (Jerry) Givens and Tanya Green; nephew, Val “Butch” Coleman; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
