George Ira Hill passed away peacefully on September 16, 2026, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Born on May 16, 1939, in Mercer, Tennessee, George was the oldest of nine children born to the late Roger Hill (d. July 1986) and Adlay Hill (née Day, d. July 2004).
George attended Mercer Elementary School in Mercer, Tennessee, and graduated from West High School in Denmark, Tennessee in 1957. In his youth, he began attending Denmark Baptist Church, and then sometimes later he was baptized at Jones Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal in Mercer, Tennessee. After graduating high school, George moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he lived the rest of his life. He worked for many dedicated years at OPW, a Dover company, in Hamilton, Ohio, before retiring.
On April 13, 1963, George married the love of his life, Etta B. Hill (née Howard), in Cincinnati, Ohio. Together, they built a life with 4 deaf children, Alta Marie, Anthony, Greg, and Joseph, who have lived the dreams that their parents wanted for them.
George was known throughout his life for his remarkable physical strength, warm social nature, and enthusiasm for sports—playing baseball and softball, as well as enjoying watching football and basketball. Throughout his life, George stayed closely connected with his relatives and held his deeply special bond with his family, especially his siblings, grandsons, and great-grandsons.
Preceded in Death
George was preceded in death by his parents, Roger Hill and Adlay Hill; his beloved sons, Anthony and Greg; and his siblings: Willie Hill, Earl Hill, Virgil Hill, Eugene “Gene” Hill (Betty), Katherine Whitford (Thomas), Clarence Hill (Eunice), Roger “Roy” Hill (Lue), and Halbert Hill.
Survived By
His legacy lives on through his devoted wife, Etta Hill; his daughter, Alta Marie Miller (Matthew); his son, Joseph Hill; his daughters-in-law, Gina Hawthorne (wife of the late Anthony Hill) and Carol Stuckey (wife of the late Gregory Hill); his surviving siblings, Elahu “Ellis” Hill (Lorene), Alfred Hill (Debbie), and Forestine McIntee (Yvars); a host of nieces and nephews; his loving grandchildren, Amanda Mills, Jeremiah Miller, Joshua Miller (children of Alta Marie Miller), and Carlos Hill (Melinda), Carlita Hill, and Alesia Hill (children of Anthony Hill and LaJuana Pope); and his great-grandchildren, Kelvin Nelson Jr., Atlantis Nelson, Poseidon Lewis, Apollo Hill-Mills, Carlos Hill Jr., Noah Miller, Ezekiel Hill, Amon-Ra Hill, Gracelyn Hill, Ki’Aden McFayden, Lorraina Hill, Kordell Hill, Lamina Mackey, Damarion Hill, Kavi Hill, and Aza Higginbotham; and his good friend, Willie “Rev” Henry.
George Hill will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
