Gabriel Derwin Johnson, affectionately known as “Gabo,” was born on August 12, 1957, to Samuel Johnson Sr. and Mamie M. McDaniel Johnson. On October 16, 2025, he departed this life, leaving behind a legacy of faith, music, laughter, and love.
Gabe accepted Christ at an early age and was a lifelong member of Rescue Temple Church of God in Christ (COGIC). It was there that he first shared his gift of music, singing “Jesus Said It” as a young child. From those early moments, his anointing was undeniable. His musical talent took him far beyond the church walls and across the world, yet his spiritual foundation and the power of his music to move souls never left him.
Gabriel attended Withrow High School and later made his home in California, where he lived for more than 30 years. After returning to Cincinnati, he lovingly cared for his mother and reconnected with his family and community.
He was a true sports enthusiast who enjoyed watching football, playing basketball, and staying active. He loved the outdoors and found peace in fishing whenever he had the chance. Fitness and working out were also important parts of his life, and he especially enjoyed jogging, until his health began to decline.
Beyond his talents, Gabriel was known for his impeccable sense of style. Always sharply dressed, he carried himself with a unique walk, unmistakable swag, and a presence that drew attention wherever he went. His confidence and charm were matched only by his sense of humor—he loved making people laugh and was always ready with a joke or playful prank.
Gabriel loved his children dearly, even when distance and time kept them apart. His heart was always with them, and he found joy and pride in watching his family grow and thrive. He leaves to cherish his memory two children, Kendra Nicole and Brian Keith; four beloved grand daughters, Brianna, Amari, Shanti, and Amaya; and two precious great-grandchildren, Isabella and Aaliyah.
He also leaves behind his siblings, Lawrence Johnson (Celeste) and Gwendolyn Johnson, both of Cincinnati, OH; Roman Johnson of Palmdale, CA; and Titus Johnson of Phoenix, AZ.
His memory will also be cherished by a host of nieces and nephews: Andre, Marquita, Lamar, Reggie, Justin, Devin, Michael, Titus II, and Trinity. He is also survived by his devoted aunts: Etta Mae Avant (James), Catherine Houston (Ned III), and Mary Agnes McDaniel, all of Cincinnati, OH; and Lillie M. Miller (Harold) of King of Prussia, PA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Mamie Johnson; his brothers, Samuel “Sam” Johnson and Calvin “Rick” Johnson; nephews Eric Johnson, Torrey Johnson, Eric Johnson Jr., and Rodrigo Johnson; and his beloved niece, Iyla.
He leaves to cherish his memory his Rescue Temple COGIC and Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church families, a host of cousins whom he loved dearly, his homegirl Ms Barbara Wright and countless friends whose love and laughter span from Evanston to Los Angeles, CA.
Gabriel’s music, laughter, and vibrant spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
