Edna Dozier Bratton, lived a life filled with love, faith and strength. Born on September 16, 1932, in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Adoll Hill and Edward Whitaker. Edna was a guiding light in her family, especially after her mother passed at the tragic early age of 33. As one of eight children, she understood the value of family and support from a young age.
Edna’s life was marked by her enduring dedication to service. Her career spanned 30 years within Cincinnati Public School, where she delighted many with her culinary skills as a pastry cook. Her commitment to her work was only surpassed by her devotion to her faith. As a devoted member of Fifth Christian Church in Evanston, Edna’s dedication shone through her service under several pastors and her efforts in organizing fashion shows to support church ministries.
At home, Edna was the heart of her family. Her doors and her heart were always open, especially the spare room she lovingly kept for anyone in need. For Edna, wealth was measured not in material possessions but in the joy of giving and helping those around her.
A connoisseur of good food, Edna’s fondness for Red Lobster’s crab legs was well-known, yet her home-cooked meals were legendary. Family gatherings were incomplete without her fried fish, fried potatoes and onions, and especially her famous cornbread dressing.
Edna’s zest for life extended beyond the kitchen and took her on many adventures. She was always ready with a packed bag. Whether it was a road trip to New York City, a casino bus trip, or living in Alaska for a short time, she embraced each experience with enthusiasm.
Her love for the Melrose YMCA, especially the pool, and her active participation in chair volleyball with the Bond Hill/Golf Manor club, showcased her spirited nature.
Leaving a void that can never be filled, Edna’s memory will be cherished and celebrated by her family, friends, and the sisters of the Twasi Federated Women’s Club. Her legacy of generosity and genuine compassion will continue to light the way for all who knew her.
As we bid farewell, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a soul that enriched us all. Rest in heaven, Granny. You will be dearly missed, but your spirit will forever guide us.
