Daniel Anderson (Danny to the home crowd) was a best friend to me, but to many, he was a unique wonder of the world. He possessed charm, good looks, charisma, and an indefatigable pride. When Danny walked into a room, everything stopped. I witnessed it more times than one can imagine while still keeping my own ego in check. He was every mother’s dream for their daughters, every man’s wish for their own sons, and every man and woman’s crush. He wasn’t just handsome; his spoken words and eloquence were as strong as his outward appearance. Daniel was blessed with a loving family and incredibly strong genes, making him a complete package. He was effortlessly a master of ceremonies at any event he attended, a welcoming conversationalist, and someone who felt as comfortable rocking combat boot roller skates at the local roller rink as donning a tuxedo for a high-end NYC fundraiser. On a personal level, we spent the better part of high school and college together, as ride or die besties. Even though we graduated a year apart, we went on to spend time together in Boston and New York over our twenties to forties. Although our lives took different paths —Danny moved back to Cincinnati, and I was building a family in NYC —we connected on many of the trips back to Cincinnati to catch up. Danny was also very private and proud. He owned his narrative and let very few, if any, people understand his world, lifestyle, or ever see him vulnerable. I’ve witnessed some of those instances and know how tough they were on his pride. I’m sad that we didn’t speak of his battle with cancer, but I can understand reflectively why he never shared it when we had the chance to catch up over these past years. My world kind of stopped for a moment when I received a text about his passing, Friday, September 5th. I think for many of us who knew him well, or even those who had the opportunity to meet him even once, it’s hard to fathom that Danny is no longer with us. He was a cultural icon and one of the most charming, informed, and iconic people I’ve had an opportunity to know. My condolences to his mom and dad, brother David, uncles, and to the whole Anderson, Turpeau, Spencer, Brown clan.
