Clyde Herman Walker (also known as “The Candy Man), age 96, passed on Monday, January 6, 2025, at his home in Cincinnati, Ohio. He spent his first few years in Athens, Ohio and in 1937, his family moved to Cincinnati, where he spent the rest of his life. He grew up with four brothers and two sisters.
Clyde served in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II. He was later drafted to serve in the army in 1952 during the Korean War and spent his service in San Francisco.
After finishing military service, Clyde found employment in the U.S. Postal Service. After working on the postal trains, he became a letter carrier. He was very popular with the residents, and especially the children and the dogs as he always had bubble gum and dog biscuits in his mailbag.
He retired to work part-time for one of the customers on his route, Mrs. Marian Stern, whose husband, Joseph Stern, had owned U.S. Shoe. After Mrs. Stern passed, he was hired part-time by Mrs. Frances Schloss, another prominent Cincinnati citizen.
Clyde was married to Beulah Kibble Walker for 55 years. They enjoyed traveling and drove across the country. Beulah volunteered at The Jewish Hospital, and when she was no longer mobile, Clyde volunteered along with her. After her death, he continued volunteering until the pandemic ended his service.
Clyde was a faithful and active member of Allen Temple, A.M.E. He sang in the Shelby Walker men’s choir. He assisted in the kitchen and with various organizations and functions at the church. He was often found sitting in the front lobby, handing out candy. Clyde loved classical music, trains, and loved to sing and tell jokes. He also enjoyed driving and was still driving at 96.
Clyde was predeceased by his wife, Beulah in 2009, and was predeceased by all his siblings. His mother, Gladys Lynch Walker, lived to 104 and her sisters lived to over 100. Surviving are his nieces, Elizabeth Neblett of New Jersey, Domonique King Carter of Cincinnati, and Stephanie Flakes of North Carolina; godchildren: Donzella Payne, Stephanie Swain, Gwen Hutchins, Eric and Kristopher White, ; close friend, Patricia Elder of Cincinnati; “adopted” children and grandchildren, Warren, Betty, Kyana, and Warren Alan Cannon of Georgia, and many, many close friends.
