We feel like we knew her because of how her aunt and our 1st lady Mrs. Shirley Searight talked about her niece Cheryl . It was all good and she has so much LOVE for her family . In times like this we need to laugh .We noticed Cheryl liked reading Carl Hiaasen, we will be ordering a book next week. We will continue to pray for all your family. Let me say how sorry I am to hear of Cheryl's passing. Me and my family give you and your family our deepest condolences. Cheryl and I had played basketball together in high school and during our summer breaks. There are so many memories, I can't just pick one. Just playing ball, partying and thinking we were invincible. I will miss my dear friend. I forget to tell you about the night we followed Eric Davis home from the club - we just needed to know where he lived since we were fans of his!! Just a fun time. Her smile will be missed. Thank you for asking me to share a memory. Nisey

Our hearts, minds, and prayers are with you during this difficult time, and we are so very sorry to hear of your loss. Our girls, who are both adults now, will always remember their "Aunt Cheryl," and I fondly recall her kindness with them, and her welcoming them both into her home and heart. We last spoke with Cheryl during the holidays just last month, and I was happy to hear that she had retained her spirit and charm. Our Condolences, Mike Coleman & Rob Kesselring Sacramento, California

Gabe Downey left a message on January 29, 2021:
I knew Cheryl from high school and was on her basketball team. We were the "twin towers" together. Cheryl made me a better person and basketball player. She showed me how to be a quiet leader. She taught me how to avoid getting my shot blocked- if I could get it past Cheryl, I could get it past anyone. She had the absolute best sense of humor and playfulness. She laughed and danced on the bus rides home. She did flips, holding onto the seats and spinning in the aisle, upside down- regardless of her 6'3" frame. She would make me guard the teammate that made a funny sound with her mouth when she was playing. She was such a great teammate. She was also the person I went to to ask academic questions, because she was also a great student. I was so sad when she graduated and left Alesia and I behind. I knew our team would never be the same. I kept track of Cheryl more recently through facebook and visited with her a few times with the teammates. Cheryl's illness never defined her- she was still the same clever, funny, thoughtful person. We bonded over our love for Carl Hiaasen books- she loved them because they made her laugh. Everytime I read one of his books it makes me think of her. Your family lost a treasure but the memories of Cheryl will live through us all. Please give hugs to your parents and other family members from me. Much love, Gaby Downey
