Charlie “Choo Choo” Jones of Mason, Ohio completed his earthly journey on December 12, 2023, earning his heavenly wings at the age of 76.
Charlie was the youngest child born to Floyd and Willie Bell Jones in Shamrock, West Virginia Logan County.
Growing up Charlie loved an adventure, he would always sneak off Shamrock Hill to avoid chores. Charlie played various sports excelling in football. He played football at Logan High School under the direction of Coach Lacy Smith. He was an outstanding tight end, which earned him a full ride, four-year scholarship to Marshall University in Huntington W. Va. Charlie was lightning fast which earned him the nickname “Choo Choo” from his Thundering Herd teammates.
While at Marshall, Charlie became a member of the fraternity Kappa Alpha Phi Inc., where he met lifelong friends. While at Marshall, Charlie also earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degree in education.
Following graduation, Charlie returned to Logan to pursue his career as a teacher. He spent his professional life shaping the future of his students.
Before leaving Logan WV, he was proud to serve as both Vice Principal and Assistant Football Coach at Logan High School.
In 1990, Charlie relocated with his beautiful wife, Rena, to Cincinnati, Ohio and continued to teach in the Cincinnati Public School System. Charlie spent over 40 years of his life educating, mentoring, and guiding students. He retired in 2013.
Charlie brought his gardening skills from Shamrock Hill to the city of Cincinnati. He took great pride in his backyard garden, growing a multitude of fruits and vegetables. Visitors never left his house without him harvesting some crops for them to take home. In his spare time, he enjoyed golfing, bowling, and meticulously manicuring the lawn.
Charlie also enjoyed spending time in his man cave watching western movies and rooting for the Thundering Herd and the Cincinnati Bengals.
Charlie shared a lifelong bond with his wife Rena whom he cherished for 39 years. He also enjoyed spending time with his four-legged BFF, Mocha.
Left to mourn him in passing is his loving wife, Rena Toliver Jones; sister, Lorene Goggins; brothers, Cornelious “Papa” (Maryjo) Jones; his canine companion, Mocha; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his brothers; Thomas “Tommy”, Fredrick “Doc”, James “Sonny”, and John Henry; sister, Mary Smith, and his parents, Floyd and Willie Bell Jones.
