Carol Jean Birch, affectionately known as “Nick” to her loved ones, was born on January 10, 1946, to Eugene and Lizzie Towe in Harlan, Kentucky. She was the second of twelve children and was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Dunlap Street.
She met the love of her life, Earl Birch, and from that union came five children whom she loved and devoted herself to—four boys and one girl. Carol followed her husband in faith and became closer to God, joining the House of God under the guidance of Pastor Mary Morton, her sister-in-law.
From an early age, Carol had a great business mind and a passion for home décor. She opened Carol’s Variety on Elm Street, just steps away from the family’s tire shop, Downtown Tire.
Carol was a sweet soul. To know her was to love her. Firm in her beliefs, open and loving to all, she especially cherished her children and grandchildren. Her favorite pastimes included spending time with her beloved poodle, Hershey, sitting outside the shop and talking with customers, writing receipts and. She loved reading Amish novels, working on puzzles, and listening to B105.
She is survived by her children Don, Tim, Matt, and Lisa; her beloved poodle Hershey; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She also leaves behind eleven siblings: Gary, Larry, Shirley, Ed, James, Elizabeth, Edith, Sheila, Ricky, Randy, and Ronnie.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Lizzie Towe; her son, Earl Birch Jr.; and her husband, Earl Birch Sr.
Our precious mom is finally reunited with her two first loves, Bub and Dad.
