Betty R Butts was born Jan 14, 1930, in Cincinnati Ohio to Elizabeth Calhoun Payne. Betty departed this life Tues September 19th, 2023.
Betty was preceded in death by her mother and former spouse James Jessie Butts and siblings, James Washington, Donald Washington, Ronald Tims Sr. (Redd) and Geraldine Bray (Chick).
Betty Rose attended East Vocational Technical School where she majored in tailoring which is what we now call Fashion Design. During that era in time the economic hardships and strains for Afro Americans was great and Betty Rose determined she was worth more working independently for herself as a seamstress, Betty could do anything she set her mind to.
Betty would then eventually meet James Jessie Butts and they would marry then move to Milwaukee, WI. Due to her husband being drafted for WW II and deployed to Germany, Betty would move back to Cincinnati with their young daughter of four years.
Well known for her seamstress skills by most people that knew her, she tailored the majority of all of her and her daughter’s clothing along with family members, close friends, and many others.
Betty would be a housewife and seamstress sewing was more than a hobby for her it was her passion she enjoyed because it allowed her to be creative. Yes, she did have hobbies that included reading romance novels, her favorite author was Johanna Lindsey, and she also was an Avet comic book collector for several years.
She had several nicknames lovingly called Betty Boop, Boop, Granny, Card Shark Betty, and always Momma. What she enjoyed most was playing her numbers, beating us in tunk making us play for money no more than a quarter a hand, let me remind you never for fun if you playing you playing for some type of money, that was the card shark in her. She loved life and lived it to the fullest.
Granny, Momma leaves to cherish her memory loving daughters Alfreda B James, Sylvia Butts, adopted daughter, Carolyn Caldwell sons Marvin G.
