Barbara Jean Mitchell

There are some lives that leave footprints, and then there are lives that leave legacies. Assistant Pastor Barbara Jean Mitchell’s life was a testimony of unwavering Faith unconditional love, selfless service, and steadfast devotion to God. She did not simply speak about faith- she lived it. Through every season of joy and every valley of hardship. Barbara remained anchored in Christ. Becoming a source of strength, wisdom, hope, and encouragement to everyone blessed enough to know her.

Barbara Jean Mitchell was born on May 5, 1941, to the late Pastor Mary Morton. Raised in a family rooted in faith, she learned early that prayer changes things, love heals hearts, and God never falls. Those truths became the foundation upon which she built her life.

On June 25, 2026, Barbara peacefully exchanged time for eternity at Bethesda North Hospital. While her family graves her absence, they rejoice knowing that Heaven welcomed home a faithful servant whose work on earth was complete.

Over the past several years, Barbara courageously battled numerous health challenges. Yet every challenge became another testimony of God’s faithfulness. Time after time, the Lord answered prayers, restored her strength, and granted her precious additional time with those she loves. Her life became living proof that God is still a healer, still a miracle worker, and still Faithful to his promises. Those extra days, months, and years became priceless gifts to her family-moments they will treasure forever.

Barbara spent her final season at Cedarview Rehabilitation and Nursing Care in Lebanon, Ohio. There she became much more than a resident-she became family. The staff lovingly cared for her and looked forward to hearing her daily songs of p[raise. Her solo concerts filled the halls with hoy, laughter, worship, and hope. Even during her own physical struggles, Barbara never stopped ministering. She continued lifting spirits simply by lifting her voice.

Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Pastor Mary Morton; her four devoted sons: Charles Birch Sr. (Brenda), James Mitchell, Eric Mitchell (Joye), and Micheal Mitchell.

She also leaves to cherish her memory of her beloved grandchildren: Charles Birch jr. Erica Mitchell, Jasmyn Mitchell, Anjelica Upshaw, Jordyn Mitchell, Miya Mitchell, Nicole Mitchell, and Kayla Mitchell, Nicole Mitchell, and Kayla Mitchell. Her treasured great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, spiritual children, and dear friends whose lives were forever touched by her love.

Barbara spent her childhood in the beautiful hills of Manchester, Kentucky, before relocating to Cincinnati, Ohio. She later settled in Evanston, where she followed her uncles, the Birches, into the tire industry. She graduated from Courter Technical High school and furthered her education at Mount St. Joseph, Always believing in the value of hard work and lifelong learning.

Barbara faithfully dedicated 34 years of service to The Formica Company. She earned the respect of everyone she worked alongside through her integrity, kindness, and tireless work ethic. Along the way she formed lifelong friendships with Mrs. Leola, Mrs. Barbara, Mrs. Tiny, Mr. Gary, Miss Addie, and many members of her shift crew, who became more like family than coworkers.

Following the godly example of her mother, Pastor Mary Morton, and Her aunt, Pastor Jewel, Barbara answered God’s call into ministry. She faithfully served as Assistant Pastor and Elect Lady at The House of God Church in Madisonville, Ohio, whether She preaching, teaching, counseling, praying, or singing, Barbara greatest desire was to see lives transformed through the power of Jesus Christ.

Her ministry extended far beyond the church walls. As a foster parent and counselor through the Hamilton County Beech Acres Association, Barbara opened both her home and her heart to children and families in need. She became a safe place for the hurting, a counselor to the discouraged, an advocate for the vulnerable, and a mother figure to many who simply needed someone to believe in them. Her life was a reflection of Christ’s love in action.

She taught by example that faith is strongest when life is harvest, that love is shown through sacrifice, and that prayer is our greatest weapon. The countless lives she touched stand today as evidence that one faithful woman can change generations. Although we will deeply miss her smile, her laughter, her songs, and her comforting embrace, we find peace knowing that she has heard the words every faithful servant longs to hear.

The greatest gift she gave us was not something we could hold in our hands-

it was the assurance that someone was always praying for us.
