Almon Sims Jr.

Almon Sims, Jr was born September 11, 1943 in Cincinnati, Ohio to the union of Almon Sims, Sr. and Lois Randolph Sims. Almon was the eldest of four children born of this union: Almon, Jr, Joann Gilliam (deceased), Emma (Sims) Johnson and Pearline (Sims) Smith (deceased). On January 25, 1953, Almon accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at Peace Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Joseph Hudson.

Almon (Al) was a keen student, having grown up in the city’s West End. He attended Sands Elementary, Bloom Jr. High and Robert A Taft H.S., where he excelled in track and basketball. Al graduated from the class of 1962. He immediately pursued college at Central State University on a full baseball scholarship. Al graduated in 1966 with a degree in Business Administration, Accounting and Marketing Major.

Behold, Al was immediately drafted into the military and spent 2 years serving his country in Germany. He played baseball for the United States Army but also sharpened his skill for materials management. After military, Al returned and pursued management for Cincinnati Gas & Electric. He retired as Materials Manager Division Supervisor from Duke Energy (formerly Cinergy and a merger with Indiana Gas in Plainfield, IN) after 34 years of continuous service.

While at Duke he chaired the United Way Campaign. He worked to help young boys at The Findlay Street Neighborhood House and he taught golf to young boys and girls at Tony Yates Golf Academy (now a part of the Cincinnati Recreation Department Youth Program). Al saw one student he mentored and played against in golf, his great niece, Erinn.

We loved this young man, Almon. Our hearts are broken that he had to leave us so soon.

Al is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Pearline and sister Joann. He leaves his life memories to be carried on by his wife, Mary, his daughter Caroline and her children, his sister Emma and host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Al transitioned August 22nd, the 4th weekend, which he always cherished as the time of his family reunion in Statham, GA. Al fought a good fight having spent the last 3 years battling liver cancer. He was loved by many. We’ll miss “Uncle Boo” as he was lovingly called.
