Alberta Wharton exchanged this earthly life for her eternal home on August 1, 2024. Alberta was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on December 15, 1946. She was the fourth child blessing the union of the late George and Iola Wharton. Alberta had four siblings to precede her in death, two sisters, Elease Barnett and Williemenia Scott, two brothers Walter Jackson and George Wharton. One sister-in-law; Mable D. Jackson, four brothers-in-law; Ralph Barnett II, Leonard Williams Sr., Benjamin S. Wright III, and Larry O. Scott.
Alberta graduated in 1966 from Courter Technical High School. During her working career she was an employee for several companies. She held positions at US Playing Cards Company, US Postal Services, Kahns Meat Packing, Fifth Third Bank and lastly Cincinnati Children’s Hospital until her passing.
Alberta accepted Christ at an early age and joined Peace Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Joseph Hudson. Alberta loved her family and was generous with her time and talents when and wherever needed. God blessed her with a Spirit of giving, and a hilarious sense of humor. She stood in the gap when called upon to referee, babysit, run errands, and serve as a caretaker including dropping off any medical supplies needed. Alberta was a living example of an angel living amongst us.
Alberta was a private and extremely benevolent person. She would see a need in an individual and act upon it, looking for no reward or acknowledgement. She had a way of lifting the spirits of all those around her, whether it be leaving a pot of soup at your house, slipping dollars into your pocket, and you may even find dollars in the cupholder of your car just because she thought you may need it for gas.
Alberta’s sense of humor held no boundaries and could make you laugh simply by making up phrases you never heard before. Example being, “Who gives a Kicky” when someone would be speaking negatively. Those words would change the direction of the conversation to something much more pleasant. We routinely gathered for Friday night movies and Sunday dinner. During those wonderfully special times a dispute/debate would usually arise regarding a movie star’s history. She would calmly proclaim “She was right because she read it in People magazine and People don’t lie!” More importantly, “She was a real senior citizen, and we were fake senior citizens.”
Alberta was active within her community as a council member and donated her time to the many events that were held in the neighborhood and elsewhere. These are just a few things that speak to the character of Alberta Wharton! She leaves to cherish her memory; all of Cincinnati, Ohio, two sisters, Annie L. Williams, and Mary A. Wright, one sister-in-law; Jacqueline Wharton, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, a favorite oldest cousin Cora Colvin, a special friend Diane Sneed, and many other relatives and friends.
