Richard Stephen Walton Sr. (76) also affectionately known as Dickey among family and friends, born on December 11, 1948, was the second child born to Dorothy and Kane Walton, both of whom have preceded him in death. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and grew up on Blair Ave. in Avondale. He attended Rockdale Elementary, Samual Ach Junior High School, and graduated from Withrow High School, in 1968. Months after graduation, he chose to enlist in the Air Force, enabling him to make his own choice instead of being drafted. During his enlistment, he rose to the rank of Sargeant, traveling to several states and abroad to England and Greenland. He was honorably discharged in 1972 after his last station in New Jersey. After leaving the Air Force, he worked with his dad at a paint mixing company. In 1974 he began working for the US Postal Service. His first job was as a mail carrier and later he became a mail handler/expeditor until he retired in 2011 after 37 years with the US Postal Service.
After leaving the Air Force he later met Cornelia (Taylor) where they formed a mutual and growing relationship. In November of 1976, they were married. Richard became a dad to John (aka Timmy), Jill and Denise (aka Denny). To this union 2 children were born, Tisa (1978) and Richard II (1980). Cornelia and Richard were married 49 years.
Playing sports was a huge part of Richard’s life. While he played sports including football it was baseball that he loved the most. At an early age he began his love and enthusiasm for baseball. As a youth he grew up playing with the Knothole Little League Baseball Organization. He played baseball for most of his life, including throughout high school and adulthood. He mostly played third base but played short stop early on.
At times he played on teams with his brothers, Robert and Terry. He played on several sponsored teams including Stop Inn, Lens Crafters as well as the Post Office’s baseball team and while in the Air Force. While playing baseball he traveled to several states throughout the Mid-west. He received quite an assortment of trophies which were always on display in the home. He continued playing baseball for as long as he was physically able to play. Along with playing baseball he coached several of Richie’s little league football and baseball teams. He also coached his basketball team for St. Boniface for one year.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory: his wife, Cornelia; his children, John, Jill (Chris), Denise, Tisa and Richie; his grandchildren, TaQuio, Briana, Shaylin, Bryce, Branton, Nadia, Sasha, and LaCole; brothers James Walton (aka Jimmy), Robert Walton (aka Bobby), Terry Walton (Mary), and Alan Geans (Tonya), his nephew, Antjuan Walton and a host of close relatives and friends.
