On Thursday, February 1, 2024, God dispatched an angel from glory to escort His daughter, Mamie Matilda McDaniel Johnson from labor to reward. She was born August 5, 1928, in Macon, Georgia, to God-fearing parents, Superintendent George W. McDaniel, Sr. and Lillie M. McDaniel. She was the fifth of nine surviving of 11 children born of this union.
She received her education in the Atlanta, Georgia public school system. She migrated with her family from Macon, Georgia to Atlanta, Georgia, where, after the death of her father, her mother and siblings later settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, and became members of the Rescue Temple Church of God in Christ under the pastorate of Bishop Malachi C. Johnson, Sr.
She accepted the Lord as her personal Savior at an early age and was a baptized member of the Church of God in Christ. It was at the Rescue Temple Church where she met and later married Samuel Johnson, who preceded her in death. Since they were teenagers, they got permission from their parents to marry. During her marriage, she was a stay-at-home mom for their seven children (six sons and one daughter). God kept them as husband and wife for 62 years. When you saw one, you knew the other was not far behind.
“Tillie,” as she was affectionately called by her husband, was blessed with the gift to sing, and became known as the “Songbird of the church.” She loved using her voice to bless the Lord and was the lead soloist in the adult choir for over 50 years. Some of her favorite songs were “Give Us This Day” “God Is Good to Me” and “He Took My Sins Away.” Her words to the choir members, as well as to others, were “Remember, only what you do for Christ will last.”
She loved her husband and family with all her heart and knew how to make a house a home. She served faithfully as a former First Lady in her church and encouraged her family to also be faithful. She was a virtuous and praying woman who, along with her husband, encouraged their children to study and strive for excellence.
She was known in the community where people saw something uniquely different about her and would talk with her about almost anything and would listen to her advice or opinion. Whenever asked how she was doing, her response was clearly, “Pretty good…by the help of the Lord.” She was a role model and mentor to young people, as well as an example of love and commitment to the Lord, and all who knew her. She was a licensed Evangelist Missionary, especially to aid the women of God. On September 30, 2022, she received her doctorate of Christian Education from Temple Christian University.
Her life exemplified the words of the Scripture that exhort us to do, “Whatever your hands find to do, and to do it with all your might.” She upheld the blood-stained banner for the Lord. She served as a faithful member of the Rescue Temple Church: Sunday school teacher, choir member, sunshine band leader, and for the past 40 years, conducted Wednesday noon-day prayer, and was lead participant in the Nursing Home/Jail-Prison Ministry. She earned the name to be called “Queen” of the church. She was recently appointed to serve as the church mother under the pastorate of her late son, Pastor Calvin H. Johnson.
“And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them” Revelation 14:13. Mother Johnson…you will be sorely missed; for now, though, take your rest; we will see you in the morning.
Mother Mamie Johnson was preceded in death by: Her loving husband Dr. Samuel Johnson Sr., her sons, Samuel Johnson Jr., and Elder Calvin H. Johnson. Her grandchildren, Torrey, and Eric Johnson. Her great-grandchildren, Iyla, Rodrigo, and Eric Johnson Jr., four brothers, Charles, George, Curtis, and Raymond, two sisters, Dorothy Cunningham and Alma Mack.
Mother Mamie Johnson leaves to cherish her precious memories; (Rose); Lawrence Johnson (Celeste); (Sharon); Gwendolyn Johnson; Gabriel Johnson; all of Cincinnati, Ohio; Roman Johnson of Granada Hills, California; Titus Johnson of Glendale, Arizona; two sisters: Lillie Miller (Harold) of King of Prussia, Pennsylvania; Catherine Houston (Supt. Ned Houston, III) of Cincinnati, Ohio; two sisters-in-law, Etta M. Avant (James); Mary A. McDaniel both of Cincinnati, Ohio. Her legacy continues through 15 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Lovingly submitted,
