Frances was born in Elberton, Georgia on May 25, 1931 to the union of Susie Fortson and RC Rucker. Frances was the youngest of seven children born to that union. Her parents and all of her siblings preceded her in death.
At an early age, Frances gave her life to Christ and attended Oak Grove Baptist Church in Elberton, Georgia, under the leadership of Rev. Frank Jones. In 1950, Frances moved to Cincinnati, Ohio and attended Beulah Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. David Glenn. There she served on the Missionary Board. In later years, Frances joined New Christian Life Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Flave Hunter.
While growing up in Elberton, Georgia, Frances attended Elberton County School Systems. Upon moving to Cincinnati, Ohio, she attended Poro Beauty School in 1951 where she pursued her passion of becoming a hair stylist, as she did until 2009. Frances also modeled for the Evander Cherry Models for several years. Frances enjoyed outings such as a night of theatre at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and getting dolled up for the Ebony Fashion Fair. Those nights weren’t complete until she said, “I am absolutely, positively, stunning!”
On November 22, 1952, Frances married the love of her life, James Braxton, who preceded her in death. To this union, three children were born.
Frances leaves to cherish her memories: two sons, Rickey (Sharon), Anthony (Dana) and daughter, Valorie, all of Cincinnati, OH; six grandchildren, Lilkeisha Smith of Cincinnati, OH, Kara Braxton of Charlotte, NC, Brieyanna Braxton, Brittany Braxton, Anthony Braxton and Alyse Braxton, all of Cincinnati, OH; three great-grandchildren, Josiah Archie, Troy Archie and Lailah Smith-Ferguson; a half-sister, Delrey Christian of Atlanta, GA; a goddaughter, Venita Ashe of Cincinnati, OH; and a host of other relatives and friends.
