Everett “The Cork” Cork

Everett Augustus Cork, Jr. was born in Lincoln Heights, Ohio on December 2nd,1946 to the late Everett Cork Sr., and Frances Smith. He departed this life on Sunday, October 22nd, 2017.
Everett was raised in Kennedy Heights and graduated from Woodward High School in 1964. After high school, he joined the United States Navy in 1967, where he served until 1971. During his time in the military, he married Carol in 1968, and was blessed with children Yolanda and Diallo. In 1984, he married Patricia, affectionately known as “The Queen,” and was blessed with another child, Di’Anda, from this union. After working for the Cincinnati Gas and Electric Company for eleven years, he stepped out on faith and pursued his destiny in radio by joining the staff of WCIN in 1976. It was there that he discovered that there was a need for the public to have the music they listened to presented by someone by whom they could readily identify with, and went on to have an impressive thirty-year career. Some of the biggest highlights of his decorated career included: helping to carry on the tradition of “instant request”; bringing in listeners to be a “jock for a day”; providing local celebrities, professional athletes, and newscasters a forum to “let their hair down and show the community that they are real people; hosting the “Whispering Tornado” show which mixed spoken word with timely and inspiring music; doing and exercise program along with Edna Howell entitled “Aerobosonics”; hosting a cooking show named “Woking with Cork,” in which he would give instructions on oriental cooking, and listeners would receive menus and shirts; helping make the School Lunch Menu one of the most anticipated elements of the morning show, which would be delivered daily; being instrumental in returning WCIN to its original format of classic rhythm and blues after a brief shift to a classical music format; and being named as one of the top ten D.J.s in the country according to Dollars and Sense Magazine in 1988.
Everett was especially proud of a group he founded entitled “The Elders Program.” This program was designed to invite everyday people with everyday occupations to meet once a week at a school where they would speak to fourth, fifth, and sixth graders and tell them who they were, what they did, and what the children needed to do to get where they were. He’d meet with the principals of each school and arrange a time for each person to speak to the youth and encourage them to move forward.
During his years of retirement, Everett refused to slow down and kept himself busy with a multitude of projects including being a caregiver to The Queen, spending time with his Tuesday breakfast group “A Few Good Men of Cincinnati”, and spending time with his grandchildren. He also sang with 100+ Men’s Choir and recorded video and was a deacon for his church home Beloved Community Church. Through all of this, he never lost his love for radio, especially the essence of what WCIN meant for the community. This was the driving force for him to begin his internet radio station Classic Vibes 1480 CIN in 2016. The station combined the old school songs once played on WCIN with current R&B hits which can be heard worldwide.
Everett leaves behind to cherish his memory his father Pearson Foster; mother in law Essie Whiting (Charles); loving wife Patricia; children, Yolanda Moss (Michael), Diallo Cork (Margina), Di’Anda Putman (Anthony); sister Kim Foster Sneed; sister in laws Linda Lyons (Charles II), Michele Garrett, Gloria Johnson, Bernadette Clements, and Barbara Snow (Charles); brother in laws Jerome Clements (Martha), Marcus Whiting, John Whiting (Cheryl), and Donald Whiting (Patricia); grandchildren, Diallo Cork II, Cherish, Chardai and Chaz Moss, and Caleb Walker; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
