SSG Delphin Tom Sutherland (Tommy) was born December 5, 1947 to Bedford (preceded him in death) and Lenesse in Louisville, Kentucky. He was the oldest of eight children from the union of Bedford and Lenesse.
Continuing his life journey, Delphin embarked on his calling to join the United States Armed Forces after his completion of high school in Louisville, Kentucky at the age of 17 where he served our country for 22 years, before retiring. While serving in the U.S. Army, Delphin fought in the Vietnam War and received orders to fight in the Persian Gulf War of Desert Storm.
Following his journey from the United States Army, Delphin obtained employment at Legg’s Pantyhose (Sara Lee) where he also retired.
Following his journey from Legg’s, Delphin obtained employment at the United States Postal Service Bulk Mail Center, where he worked for 17 years. Delphin was six months away from retiring from the post office when he received his perma-nent retirement papers letting him know that his assignment had been fulfilled and job well done.
Delphin will be joining his father, Bedford and two brothers, Dwight Sr. and Dwayne, all of Louisville, Kentucky, and his son, Duane of Columbus, Ohio up in heaven where they will all be walking on the roads that are paved of gold.
He leaves to mourn, but also celebrate: his loving mother, Lenesse of Louisville, KY; a loving, devoted and faithful wife, Lila of 26 years, whom had been a part of his life for 34 years of Cincin-nati, OH; his son, Dante (Simone) of Columbus, OH; daughter, La’Cretia (Dwight) of Cincinnati, OH; two brothers, Douglas (Tyra) and David (Sherine); three sisters, Deborah (Mike), Doree (John), all of Louisville, KY and Dathine (Mike preceded him in death) of Glenburnie, MD; seven grandchildren, Dominique of Chicago, Arieanna, DanTasia and DaNasia, all of Columbus, OH, Brayden, Dwight and Dalandis, all of Cincinnati, OH; five aunts, Willie Smith, Mary Calloway, Hattie Mae Snyder, Nannie Ruth Briett, Thelma Henderson (he called her his second mother) and Ruenett Robinson (Babysister), all of Louisville, KY; sisters-in-law, Gladys, Theresa, Janice, Michelle, Markuieta (Robert) and brother-in-law, Dwight (Tayna), all of Cincinnati, OH; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and lots of friends that thought dearly of him.
Delphin was a very proud and private person; he never wanted any help from anybody, but his honey. He would always say we can do this together, just me and you. Delphin lived to see all his children get grown, and his grandchildren be born. One thing that he always stated that he wanted was to see his daughter graduate from college and on Friday, April 11, 2014, he got to see her graduate from Great Oaks Health Profes-sions Academy and she received her license a week before he was called home. He was so proud of her; he couldn’t stop talking about it.
Delphin was a great husband, father, son, bro-ther, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend. Everyone who knew him, adored and loved him, and he will forever be in our hearts and will always be loved.
An environmentally friendly option.
