It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of The Reverend Michael Joseph Brown, PhD, President of Payne Theological Seminary. Dr. Brown was a devoted servant of God, a distinguished scholar, an inspiring leader, and a faithful shepherd to many. His commitment to theological education, pastoral formation, and the advancement of the African Methodist Episcopal Church leaves an enduring legacy that will continue to shape generations to come. His announcement is made on behalf of his beloved mother, Gloria Brown Allen, and his nephew, Michael Brown.
Arrangements are pending and will be shared at a later time.
We ask that you keep the Brown family, the Payne Seminary community, and all who loved and served alongside Dr. Brown lifted in prayer as we honor a life of faith, scholarship, and service.

I am sorry to be learning about Dr. Brown's death so late. I wanted to say that I have used his book "What They Don't Tell You: A Survivor's Guide to Biblical Studies" for about 20 years in my seminary and undergraduate classes. My students, after graduating, reported that it was the most important book they read in their degree program. I am grateful for the depth of his wisdom and his ability to communicate difficult concepts in understandable ways. I wish I had known him personally.

He hired me to work and improve the finances at Payne after he became President. He was not only a dedicated President and professional, but also a kind and supportive colleague. He was deeply committed to to success of Payne Seminary. Dr. Brown’s presence will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
