Landon J. Smith, Sr., affectionately known as “Lil Bro” and “Big Pop,” was born on January 2, 1948, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to the late Joseph and Beatrice Smith. He was the youngest of two sons, growing up alongside his older brother, Joseph, Jr. In his final days, Landon found solace in his unwavering faith, calling upon Jesus repeatedly to ease his physical pain. On August 5, 2024, God, in His mercy, answered Landon’s prayers and granted him peace, rescuing him from his suffering. Psalm 145:17-19.
In 1967, Landon married the love of his life, Charnee´ Smith, beginning a beautiful journey together that spanned almost six decades. Charnee´ lovingly calls Landon a “gentleman among gentlemen”. Their union was blessed with two children, Michelle D. Smith and Landon J. Smith, Jr. As a devoted husband and father, Landon was the consummate provider, ensuring that his family always had what they needed, which sometimes meant working two jobs at a time.
Landon had a long and successful career, dedicating his talents and work ethic to Cincinnati Milacron and Ethicon before retiring from the City of Springdale. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Landon was a passionate sports enthusiast. He played football and baseball at Withrow High School and later competed in local amateur boxing, inspired by his admiration for Muhammad Ali. His love for sports extended to semi-professional baseball, which he played after high school.
Landon had a deep love for Jesus and cherished his personal relationship with Him. He took great joy in attending church with his beloved wife, where he was water baptized on September 25, 2016, and later received his spiritual baptism on September 22, 2019. In his spare time, Landon found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He had a passion for grilling at family gatherings, took meticulous care of his lawn, and took great pride in keeping his vehicles spotless, often rising early on weekends to tend to them. He cherished the time spent fishing with his son, Landon, Jr., and made many memories on the road with Charnee´, preferring to drive to their destinations rather than fly.
Above all, Landon treasured his family and prioritized creating lasting memories with them, ensuring they took annual family vacations throughout his children’s formative years. Somehow, watermelon always found its way into every road trip. As his family’s greatest supporter, Landon never missed an opportunity to express how proud he was of each of them. His enduring love will be cherished and forever remembered by his wife, Charnee´ Smith; daughter, Michelle D. Smith; son Landon J. Smith, Jr. (Felita); and four grandchildren: Timothy W. Headen, II (Laura); Trey P. Gentry; Lauren A. Smith; and Landon J. Smith, III. He also leaves behind three great-grandchildren: Audriana R. Headen; Madilynn A. Headen; and Melodi M. Headen, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends who will continue to honor his memory.
Landon J. Smith, Sr.’s life was marked by his dedication to his family, his love for sports, and his unyielding work ethic. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
