Virkett A. Chapman (98) of Cincinnati, Ohio passed away peacefully at her residence on August 22, 2016 in the company of her husband and son. Virkett was born on August 1, 1917 in Wyoming, Ohio to parents, Charles E. Armstrong and Artie Mae (Poston) Armstrong. Her sister, Dolores Conyers of Dayton, Ohio and brother, Charles E. Armstrong Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio, preceded her in death. She is survived by brother Walter E. Armstrong of Detroit, Michigan.
Virkett was married to Raymond Chapman Sr. on July 8, 1941 and to this extraordinary marriage of 74 years were born two children: Raymond Chapman Jr. and Lisa D. Chapman (deceased) both of Cincinnati. Virkett loved her family and made them the center of her life. Lisa, her youngest, held a special place in her heart and, over the years, their relationship became much more than mother and daughter. After Lisa’s death (1999), she often spoke of her with deep affection and admiration.
Virkett attended West Virginia State University and was a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority.
Virkett started her government employment with the Department of Agriculture followed by a long career with the Internal Revenue Service as a manager in corporate returns. She retired from the IRS in 1980.
Virkett was a remarkable mother and wife. She was as avid reader and instilled the pleasure of reading in both her children. As a younger woman, she loved horses and had a small riding stable and gave lessons in the art of horsemanship. She loved to swim and was a crack shot with a rifle. She gave to the Cincinnati Symphony and was a lover of the fine arts.
Virkett had a long and remarkable life. She lived it, as she passed away, with dignity and grace. She was loved by all who knew her.
Virkett leaves to morn her passing, her husband Raymond Sr., her son Raymond Jr., her grandchildren Vincent and Sacheem, her great grandchildren Adam and Gavin, brother Walter Armstrong and a host of relatives and friends.
