I remember the first time I saw Virgil, he was playing for the legendary coach, Joe Martin of Lockland Wayne. It was in 1954 and they played Hamilton Big Blue in a Holiday Tournament, in Hamilton. The two players that I most remembered was Denny Ballew and Virgil Thompson. The rest of the team was memorable because they all had Don Eagle hair cuts. However, the cheer leaders were probably even more memorable because of their short outfits and sexy performances.Wayne went on to beat Hamilton in that game.
Hamilton, who had the great Alex "Boo" Ellis, lost by the score of 55 to 54. I also remember Hamilton Big Blue winning the State class A championship in 1954 and Lockland Wayne winning the class B state championship in 1955. Thanks Virgil for the great memories. R I P.
