Vernon Victor Jones was born on February 28, 1939 in Newark, NJ. He was the second oldest child of the late Lorraine and Thomas Jones, Sr. Vernon was raised on Boyd Street, with his seven siblings. Then as a teenager, the Jones family moved to Columbus Holmes projects, where he met and married his beautiful late wife, Eva Mae Jones.
Vernon attended Cleveland Junior High School and later, inspired by his wife, went to get his GED diploma. Vernon worked and retired as an electrician and maintenance man from New Community. He was also a Deacon at Bethel Pentecostal House of Prayer.
Vernon was a tough, strong independent man, who worked hard to provide for his family. He was also a great handyman. He could fix or put together anything. He loved to fish, play chess, dominoes, listen to music, and especially dance. Vernon was a great Latin dancer. Once you put music on, Vernon will get moving. He had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh or make people laugh. Vernon enjoyed traveling and doing things with his family. If he wasn’t around his wife and kids, he was off visiting his siblings.
Vernon was a great husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather, he will truly be missed.
Vernon was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Antaya Shanelle Grimes; stepson, Willie Grimes, Jr.; and siblings, Thomas Jones, Jr., Lorraine Scott, Edward Jones, and Sandra Jones.
Left to cherish his memories are daughters, Rosetta Holder (Gene), Veronica Bolden (Dimitrius), Alicia, and Yolanda Jones; sons, Derrick McCall (Valerie), Vernon Jones, Jr., Lamar Jones (Cassandra); sisters, Ghalyoh Jones, Carol Smith and Mae Wilson; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and grandchildren.
